sealing crankcase halves on 750
« on: November 07, 2017, 08:48:51 AM »
I'm thinking of using a liquid type of sealer, such as the old permatex shellac type to seal the crank case
halves. Seems like would be easier to apply and have a little more set up time
to perform the tidious operation of lining everything up when setting the two halves. Has anyone
used it for this purpose? I'm certain there other brands/types that are far better, but this seems like it would
do the job. Any successes or failures?   thx..

I have built many engines using Threebond 1194. Works very well.

Hundreds of thousands of engines out there that are sealed up tight with 1194. 8)

I've used Loctite 518 and love it. It's anaerobic so you have pretty much an infinite amount of time to seal it up. I used that for my first case seal because I wanted to go slow. Liked it so much I used it for my second go. Probably all I'll use now. I recommend it.

I haven't had to take the cases apart, but apparently it stays gooey so it's easy to come apart and clean off. Any that squeezes into the case will get washed off by the oil and never cure. It's designed for zero clearance aluminum flanges, exactly what we have here.

It appears the Threebond 1194 has been discontinued and replaced by 1184.

I vote for Loctite 518,

one of the advantages not mentioned of Loctite 518 is that it squeezes to thin film of 0.01mm...
that is important because of crankcase bearing selection.... you are selecting new bearings with around 0.02mm - 0.03mm clearance(with plastigage etc...).  This goes down the drain if you use thick sealing material....

One disadvantage is that you need to use removal solvent... is not that easy to remove like hondabond...

I figured that as the website did not list 1194. Yamabond, Suzukibond, and the original Hondabond are 1194 too.

I have always used Gasgacinch.
Never had a case leak and it comes off easily.

I will have no excuses if my cases leak when I'm done.  I never considered the crush thickness
factor before. Interesting....It's been so long ago that I resealed a case, I forgot about the others mentioned.
Lots of good choices thanks :)
