Motion pro clutch cable, don't fit lever, stiffer than old one!
« on: November 11, 2017, 06:44:26 AM »
Replacing my clutch cable, it got a little hot and melted some plastic.
It still worked fine, just wanted it to look right?
In the past I've motion pro, and parts unlimited with good results.
I ordered a motion pro off ebay,came in a new pkg,unopened.
I opened it up and it's a little stiff, like some drag on it.
I remove old cable, install new one on bottom, rout it up to lever, and the little round cylinder lead thing that goes into the Lever is too long.
I get out a couple files and start shortening it until it fits.
Finally get it all together and the damn thing is way harder to pull than my old One!
I'm trashing it today and installing the old one.
Anyone have a preference on cable brand, I'd like to order a new one that FITS!

I installed a new Motion Pro clutch cable (and 2 throttle cables) this summer. I did lube all of them when I installed them, but all moved freely before lubing them, and all fit fine without any modification needed. The clutch I was replacing was similar to yours. burnt housing from touching a header, but not frayed and working fine. The replacement was lighter and smoother feeling.

Given all that I'm gonna say your motion pro clutch cable was not normal, and probably defective.

Are you sure you have the new cable routed properly? And yes, try some lube. I use the paper funnel method and let gravity lube the cable using any partially used oil I have laying around.

I changed the routing 3 times, not much difference in any?
I did not lube it,I will give that a try before file 13?
I like wd40, have a cable lube tool straw fits in.
Then I gravity just a tad of 3 in 1 oil in.
The 15 year old cable still slick as glass, just a burnt housing!
I'll mess with it after Work!
Thanks, just wondering if MP was having quality issues?

WD40 is not lube. It turns to thick goo once the solvent dries out. Just hang the cable upright from one ferrule, dribble a little motor oil on the wire and it will run down inside. Slide the sleeve up and down on the core to help work the oil down, once it's oily at the bottom end you're done. This will also (eventually) work if you pull the clutch lever in, drop some oil on the core, work the lever a bit, and repeat, repeat, repeat.
Or get actual cable lube spray with the adapter dealie.
WD40 is nice for coating the chrome and fork tubes before storage to reduce corrosion. Not good for much else on a bike.

So I lubed the new cable, routed it 3 different ways, still stiff and drag felt.
I put the old cable back on after oil lube ,routed according to cable routing diagram someone posted, it's way better than new one, actually better than it was before I took it off, slight difference in routing by headers.
It's now smooth and easy like a honda clutch should be.
I can live with the little scar on the housing,
I must have gotten a bad Cable?
And I'll stop using wd on my cables, I'll buy some cable lube with a straw.
Thanks

Chiming in to say that I have experienced the same situation with new Motion Pro throttle cables I installed on my 75 cb750F. The throttle returns to idle slowly if released and will actually stick open if the bars are turned hard. Even with that beefy throttle return spring! They each got lubed w/ cable lube (after installation). I'm not very happy with this situation. Was expecting easier, lighter action. Seems dangerous too. I guess I'll give them some more lube and time to break in?

My first bad cable in all these years!
Unfortunately it's likely that all the aftermarket cables come from the same one or two Asian suppliers.
After I got a bad MP clutch cable I gave up on aftermarket cables.
(The problem with the MP clutch cable I got was the round ferule end piece on the clutch end of the cable was too large to fit into the hole in the cover.)
