Ok, so if you buy that crated CBX is it worth more to leave it in the crate and stabilize it so it doesn't deteriorate any further or should you assemble the bike, replacing all the undoubtedly questionable rubber and then have an almost-zero-mile CBX to display?

I mean, toys are always worth more in the original package, right?
Does the same apply to bikes?  :)

Likely, but I'd still take measures to preserve it.  Just stick the whole crate in cosmolene!

Well, also, while still crated you can't know for sure the full condition.
Uncrate it and you might find it's in really poor condition requiring work that would ultimately diminish the value as an almost-zero-mile bike.
I assume anyone prepared to spend that kind of money would be fully examining the crated bike in better conditions than those photos show.
Either way it's cool that this stuff it still out there.

Even if I were collecting it, I'd probably take it out and evaluate what needs preservation work.

I think someone had a Buick Grand National GNX that was similar (not crated but put in a shipping container and preserved).

Very nice bike. No sun fade!!  That’s the year and color that went to the schools.  The 79 is worth the most then the 80 model. But IMO that’s a good deal for that bike.  Wonder when the last time it was run?  Great fine thanks for sharing

I called him today. He owns a Yamaha dealership which was his dads back in the 60,s.  The bike was a school bike but the school put it on display and never touched it. He bought it 20 years ago went out of PA to another state and got a title then got a title in PA. So it’s a clean PA title. Last time it ran was 5 years ago. Ran great he said. Drained all the gas out of tank and carbs took out battery. He said he could have it running in 30 minutes. He also said whoever buys it he will have it running before you pay for it. It’s never seen the sun. No sun fade at all. Seemed like A very nice guy.

What year F1 engine, Don?  The V8 or V6 Turbo?!   I've heard both at COTA, huge difference.

He will not get asking price for that bike. Over 10k is just too much for a Prolink. Even for a low mileage and great condition one like this. 8k max is a realistic number.
I know there is the common perception that 1979 CBXes are the worth the most. Among long time (and multiple-) CBX owners this is somewhat controversial and never really quite understood. The performance advantage of the 79 over the 80 is just on paper. The hp difference is well within the manufacturing tolerance of an internal combustion engine. One contributing factor to the believe is, that early 80s had a faulty advancer that kept the bike from reaching its full potential. Many were tested and written about based on the poor performance and somehow that manifested itself in the public. Honda had a service recall for all early 469 advancers and they were replaced for free. So, a 150lbs rider on a 1980 will outrun a 185lbs rider on a 79. Believe me.

As far as value is concerned, as I said earlier, Honda made almost 24,000 79s. So, it is not really rare. And if low numbers would be a measure for value, the 1980 Japan-made bikes should be the most valuable. Less than 1,900 produced.
As far as rideabilty and "daily use" are concerned, the Prolinks beat the naked models hands down. Some weather protection, some luggage capacity and a chassis that's quite superior make these the better bikes for someone who wants to ride them now and then.

After hearing the V8's up close, main grandstand near the start line, the V6 turbo was a huge disappointment in sound. The V8's were the loudest motors and most impressive I've ever heard...

I haven't heard any of the modern ones in the last 10 years.  The thing about the V10s and V12s is the high-revving choral scream that comes out of them  That's what the CBX reminded me of.

You are certainly correct about prolink value. I had an opportunity to be 2 of them for 4,000.00. Decent shape too.
