Holy Tank
« on: November 16, 2017, 06:49:40 PM »
So i appear to have sprung a leak in my 650’s gas tank. It looks like the stem for the petcock has been bent somehow and its sweating through where the stem meets the tank. No biggie, as I said its only ‘sweating’ not flowing too bad. Does anyone know of any products that may stop the leak? I got an epoxy putty that is supposed to be ethanol resistant however not resistant enough and its seeping through again. Anyway, im under about 2 feet of snow so no big rush at the moment.

I would use a more fluid-type of epoxy rather than a putty type.

Here’s what I’d do:

Empty the tank.

Remove/clean up the existing epoxy putty.

Take the tank in dark room or under a heavy blanket to block out all light and with a flashlight shine the inside of the tank to pinpoint the exact location of the hole. Mark the area.

Flip the tank upside down, insure that the affected area is clean (acetone and denatured alcohol work well), apply a neat bead of JB Weld or a wet two-part epoxy based system over the area; may need to mask out any area around the hole that you don’t need/want covered.

Allow the epoxy to dry completely.

I would confirm that it is the actual bung-tank seam that is leaking.  If your petcock got hit to bend the area it might be the bung-petcock seal/washer.  If it is actually the brazed seam then use a Dremel and wire brush down to metal, clean with acetone (carefully because acetone will damage paint) and seal with JB weld.  Work the JB into the seam area so it gets into any cracks.  Let cure and touch up any exposed metal.

the threds is silver soldered/brased..the best is to re do it..also heat up and brusk the silver.off..klean up use fluss..klean the parts real good ..and re solder it on Again..
..
the paint vill be ruined..and the tank need to be filled vith vater and soldered upside Down..so no gas can explode..oxy/acatylen can also give a banging gas..so the vater is not only for the fuel damp..
i kan not speak english/but trying!!
