Benefit of new coils?
« on: January 01, 2007, 06:41:50 AM »
Hello and Happy New Year!

I have a '75 cb550f and am excited to order a Dyna S ignition and coils and wires from Z1 enterprises - Jeff has been super helpfull.  In the interest of finances though, I think I will be ordering it in two parts and was wondering if I will see any difference from replacing my stock coils with new 5 ohm ones.  My plug wires are in pretty ad shape, so that will be an improvement but I didn't know how coils work.
Do they gradually deteriorate over time, or is it just a matter of, they either work or don't work?  Is there a measurement that I can take?
I was just looking to get a bit of a stronger spark.
Thanks,

- Chad

TwoTired wrote up a Coil Testing Procedure that is now in the FAQ.  More recently, one of our members asked for Coil Testing for Dummies based on TwoTired's instructions.  That should get you started on testing.  As for how long coils and wires last, I'll leave that to the experts.
