Slightly odd CB350f/400f request...
« on: November 30, 2017, 07:06:58 AM »
Hey everyone,

My cursory Googling hasn't given me much in terms of results so i thought i'd ask on here instead!

I'm looking to install some shiny Velocity stacks on my 466f engined 350f and of course for added vanity i want to put some smaller (Than the 350f) side panels on to show them off with!

So my question is...

Has anyone got any photos of either a cb400f wearing a 350f tank, or a 350f with 400f side panels?  ;D

i know i'm being a cheapskate not just buying one to try fitment but i thought i'd ask before i delve into it anyway.

Thanks!

There is a 400/4 on CL right now that has a 350/4 tank installed on it.
Not mine......

Thanks Kevin, don’t really use CL in the UK so didnt think to look there - actually doesn’t look as good as I thought it would... back to the drawing board maybe!

350F and 400F side covers are not interchangeable as their frame mount tabs are in different locations

Do you mean the upper “hooks” Flybox or the lower one?

I think the problem with the bike Kevin shared is that tail fairing.  It's huge on there.  I always thought the 350 tank was gorgeous.

Agreed.

Amebix: Arise! (sorry, couldn't resist). Is your bike a CB400F engine bored to 466 in a 350F frame? Just curious... And although some will rant and rave about it, it's possible with velocity stacks to remove the side covers completely and relocate the electrical components to tidy it up, if you were so inclined (some here will decry or mock it, but whatever). Both the 400F and 350F side covers have the same style of mounting tabs on the top as you point out, but I am also unsure of whether the distance between the two is the same (and you could just figure out something for the bottom mount). That being said, you could always figure out a way to make it work. And of course running velocity stacks on the street will open up a few problems as well -- jetting and tuning the carbs correctly and worrying about dust or debris getting sucked in, but that's your call. Others filter their stacks. Regardless, sounds like you got a handle on it.

Haha! You’re the only person in Internet motorcycle forum land who’s ever known who they are! 👍🏻

And yes it’s a US import 1972 CB350f with a UK 1975 CB400f engine bored out to 466 with a few other trick bits - the only one I know of in the uk with this setup!

I’m aware of the pitfalls of velocity stacks even on a summer weekend bike like this, I’ve been running pod filters since this bike was built in 2013 and have it tuned pretty much perfectly with the stock carbs (although admittedly it’s taken me a long time to get it to that point!) I’m not a fan of the gutted out look and want to keep my frame and electrics as they are.

I’m probably just type-thinking out loud to be honest, I’ve spent far too much time sat on my couch staring at it, Had a ligament operation on my hand early summer so I’ve not really be out at all this year 😄

Thanks everyone, I’ll probably just buy a repro set after Christmas madness has subsided and see how I get on... 👍🏻

Damn, that thing looks killer!

Someone's got to have both a 350F and a 400F -- or at least the side covers -- and be able to compare them. Or at least measure 400F ones since you've got your 350F ones. Anyway, best of luck with the hand and the bike.

I think the bike looks great as is with the CB350F side covers as shown in your picture. The upper tabs should line up fine on either set of covers and the CB400F tabs can be relocated to the CB350F frame with a little welding modification for the left side frame mount. The right side attaches to a bolted on mount on the lower section of the battery box that holds the rubber grommet for the side cover and the left side is a welded tab on the frame.
The top two pics are a CB400F mounting tab set up the third picture is the left side tab mount for a CB350F on the battery box and I am looking for a right side picture of the CB350F and will post it if I can find one. The last picture shows the Cb350F battery box and both left and right mounting tabs that attach the side covers are mounted to the battery box. I believe the right side could be changed out the the correct CB400F tab bolted directly on to the right side existing mounts on the CB350F battery box. If you can fabricate or find a frame tab from a CB400F for the left side and weld it to the CB350F frame you can add both the CB400F side covers with minimal work.

You should cut down your 350 covers and custom make them to look stock style wise but smaller. You could move the emblem indent so you could still have the cool emblem. If it's too much to do yourself you could probably find a body shop that could do it for you.

Big help that mate nice one, seems like something could be easily done for the bottom mounts - I'm still not wanting to do anything that couldn't be reversed even though it'll never end up stock again, damn brain :D

And no i'm not gonna start hacking into the original ones although it crossed my mind that you could maybe take like and inch out of the middle and cut and shut them back together, sadly that kind of thing is a little bit "Witchcraft" to me - Engine building, yes, plastic/fiberglass etc, not so much :D

I'll report back with what direction i take in the off chance that 10 years down the line somebody's wondering the same thing and finds this thread...

That's a tasty addition to any living room, the seat would make a good spot for the TV dinner, and probably not so much for a cold NewCastle, the One and Only... it might not have the perch for a bottle!
Seriously, nice looking bike, I would LOVE to try it out on a road course like Mid Ohio or Nelson Ledges Race Course!

I have purchased a side cover from this fellow on eBay, but through his site, he makes side covers for $35 each and shipping. I believe he started making CB350 covers, but not sure if he has your style. But, look at them anyway, and see... his Website is RetroCB.com.
Here is his eBay store, for your perusal!
