B4 putting carbs back on, what should I check?
« on: November 24, 2017, 06:18:22 AM »
I just want to go down a check list of things that I should check before doing so so whatever happens after I try to start it I can minimize or eliminate the chances I'll have to go back in there. Thanks

what did you do to the carbs?  thoroughly clean?  set float heights?  set everything to stock spec?

Check rubber intake for cracks.
Throttle return spring.
Throttle cable should be smooth,no snags.
Rubber hoses between carbs.
Bench synk.
Air or fuel screws set to spec.
No trash or debris in air box.

A always like to set my carbs upright outside on a bench and hook my slave tank to them and fill them with fueland let them sit for awhile before mounting to check for leaks or other problems. Good time to replace the fuel line also while they are off, much easier now then later someday when they are mounted.

+1 and while they are on a bench with fuel hooked up might as well go ahead and do the clear tube fuel level check

and +2 for double checking your bench sync
If it works good, it looks good...

good idea! slave tank? basically something to hold fuel that can drop it down a line into the carbs? would a small can suffice just to test? what do you need, enough fuel to fill the bowls? 5oz +/-?

Should I do anything with the valves or check compression or timing while it's still out or would none of that be necessary while carbs out? I think not but just checking if there's anything in those checks that's easier with carbs out. also i haven't run this bike at all yet so i don't know the previous conditions pertaining to any of the tests

Also, should I bypass the vacuum pet cock? im in the process of reading up on that and want to fully understand the benefits and drawbacks if any and why was it put in there in the first place if no one wants it?

I have an old plastic riding lawnmower gas tank suspended in a frame with a cheap inline on/off petcock installed to regulate the flow of the gas. A splitter also allow me to run two gas lines like a cb750 carb has. You can see it here in this picture.

If carbs have been sitting for years, left with fuel in.... They need to be cleaned. Pilot jet and needle jet will be clogged. Maybe the float valve too. I clean mine like this: (ongoing...I have done 2 of 4 so far)

juntjoo, if you haven't ran this bike and you are asking about valves and timing you should probably perform the 3000 mile maintenance on the bike.  do you have the shop manual?
