Cant remove kick start pin
« on: November 26, 2017, 10:09:36 AM »
Hi All,
Just building my first 76 SS motor.  Have the whole thing torn down except the kick start assembly.  I tried removing the pin that holds it in but cant seem to get it.  I grabbed the end with a vice grips and heated the block with MAP gas.  Cooled and repeated 3 times with PB blaster.

Any tricks of the trade to share?

Thanks in advance.
Rick

Did you grab the pin in a position where the slit was orientated correctly so it would contract somewhat. I have squeezed the pin with a pair of old dull wire cutters before down low close to the case metal and tapped the cutters with a small hammer on engine cases I was just parting out.

I haven't tried that yet.  Will give it a go.

Ekpent is on to it.

It's nice the search is working, I found this pic and reply from 2008:
I used the diagonal pliers and popped the pin right out. Grab the pin as close to the case as possible. Just squeeze hard enough to get a bite, then push down, using the handles as a lever.

+1

Side cutters worked very well for me as well.  And don't worry too much about scaring the split pin some, it will just improve the grip when driven back into place on reassembly.

The side cutters worked great.  Thanks so much for the advice.
