Funny mine is to curse at random, eat no fruit and smoke in the grocery store.  ;D Notice I still give away no money  ;) ;D

Good for you Heffay....if you can go a few days without.try a few more....maybe you can kick it that way.I've been smoking so long....its gonna be hard to quit.I have a lot of people in my corner and I am setting myself a bit of a time frame. I will start taking anti depressent medication in March (this is what helped a good friend of mine kick 5 years ago). Anyhow,it is a deadly & expensive habit and I hope to beat it. Now I have to come up with a resolution.....stealing cars and fruit at the store just don't sound right....you know?

Breeze, dont get hung up on what to steal. Just make a promise to yourself that you are going  to steal. You owe it to your self.

        Hey Breeze,

My Dad started smoking when he was about 14  and one day, in Feb 67',  he just laid them down (said he was tired of the coughing and such) and hasn't touched one since. That's been 39 yrs ago. Now, my Mom is a different story. She said that she would stop smoking when my Dad did and I approached her about it. Finally, about 4 1/2 years ago she had to quit, she had Lung Cancer. The operated on her to see about removing the injected area. It had spread too far for that, so they sewed her back up and then she took treatments. within about a couple of months, her health was failing and  the doctor has her admitted to the hospital again and they found that she had Cancer in the lower rear portion of the brain. The surgery was successful and so, we thought she was on her way to recovery. The following Dec, she went back into hospital, went into a coma and after some time, they couldn't do anything so they were going to send her to a Rest Home in the small town by where my Dad and Mom lived. Now, I was a bit nervous about that decision because my Grandmother (My Mom's Mother) was living in that same Rest Home. As it turned out, They were getting her ready to be moved, had her in the ambulance and was making some final checks and found that only moments before, she had passed on. You might know that it would happen on one of the very few days that I wasn't down there.
Breeze, I have to apologize to you, I only intended to go into how my Dad gave up smoking after all those years without any trouble and that my Mom had trouble quiting. I didn't really intend to go into all this, it just kinda happened. Hope you understand now though why I wish everyone could and would give them up. I know first hand what kind of damage they can do. We also lost my Father-in-law to Lung Cancer about a year after that. He was a very good man too.

I lost my Dad due to smoking about 3 years ago.  I still haven't quit.  I am a single parent of a special needs son, and if anything happened to me it would be very difficult for him.  I am going to try AGAIN to quit an the end of January.  It's not going to be easy, but has to be done.

Well Bill.I wish I could quit as easily as your dad did but I know I will not just lay them down and quit. However it is done....it is the best thing to do. I lost both of my grandfathers....one to bronchitis, the other to emphasyna. You would think that would be enough but it isn't. Out of my 3 kids,my oldest never smoked,my middle boy does but not as bad as me and my youngest (daughter) did but recently quit after having my latest grandson. I am kind of jacked about the idea of quitting......I'll breath better and have extra cash to buy bike parts or whatever.....my kids won't have to watch me slowly die....the list goes on and on. OK....enough about that!!!!....I gotta go out and have a smoke!!! (just kidding......I had one about an hour ago and I'm fine).

Give those smokes away Mr B, I did (cold turkey) 2.5 years ago after 29 years as a "slow suicider" and now that I've lost the 50 pounds that I put on (well everything tastes so good when your taste buds come back to life after giving up...............) I'm very happy that I don't puff or pant anymore walking up a flight of stairs, and I don't STINK like all smokers (male or female) do.

Easier said than done I know, you see there are two distinct breeds of human being, one breed can't stand the smell or taste of cigarettes, never did like 'em, and has no problem never trying "the evil weed", while the other breed of human loves the smell of cigarettes, (but not necessarily the taste, after all these years) and even if he/she successfully gives up cigarettes, will always be tempted, because he/she loves that smell. Someone told me that giving up smoking is physically and mentally 10 times harder than giving up heroin, and I don't doubt that at all.

If you fail, don't worry about it, just steal your cigarettes instead of buying them, this will both save you money and reduce your intake, and you can moralise that you're taking them away from another would-be-suicide, which of course, all smokers are. Best of luck mate, and as soon as they find a tobacco that's good for you and smells good , let me know and I'll buy a pack on the way home too! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks for that Terry. Glad you quit and it gives me more reason to quit myself. I  care way less about the cost than the health benifit and you are right about the odor too. When you smoke, you don't realize it as much but there are times when I think about it affecting others. It will be nice to not get winded by just walkin up a few flights of stairs!

Dave, I'm pulling for you. Fortunately I don't smoke (did some during Junior High School. Got tired of getting caught and losing them. ;D So, I quit before I got started good. I wish you the best. You do need to be there for your son. My daughter is an epileptic and my wife and I have worked with 2 "Special Needs" young men for about 7yrs now, so I have a feeling for what you may be dealing with in that respect. You and you family will be in my prayers, if that's okay with you?

isn't it funny how a resolution thread turns into a non smoking ad...

yea, after 14 years of smoking its time... my mom will probably die of lung cancer, my grandmother died a very slow cigarette induced death, my aunt just had a heart attack christmas day and is diagnosed with COPD... basically, her body regulates itself on carbon dioxide as opposed to oxygen... or something equally scary.
i've tried to quit many times but, the excuse was that i would bum them and not buy them but, then, i was only a bum.
my asthma and i are done w/ it.

Hey Terry, I was going to respond to mrbreeze right after Dave and next thing I know, there you are. You are a slick booger aren't you? Well, anyway, you made some very good points. We all need to look out for each other so we can be there for out families and so we can get back to the forums and share our experiences and ideas, right? ??? ;)

Hey Breeze, Just a quick word to go with what Terry said. It may be hard but you can do it dude. Besides, you've got that family to be there for and you need to set the example. May you live a long healthy life and may prayers are with you, if that's okay? They're gonna be there anyway. ;)

I'm right there with you. i'm going to try to quit after this pack I think. Should be done with 'em tonight. As long as i stay occupied, I don't think about having one. But, when I'm bored, or when I step back for a break, I gotta have one. It would be a lot easier if I didn't work with so many smokers. Too easy to bum one. But I have to quit. Tired of the coughing, wheezing, stinking (and making my new baby stink when I hold him), and so on.

Well I'm jumping on the wagon too.  I've gone roughly 36 hrs and only taken a few pulls off some ugly half smoked butts out of the tray....  That'll make you really want to stop.  I figure @ ~$6 a day I will be able to buy all the parts for my '75 K5 overhaul in about 5 months! (~$900 I will have saved)  maybe I'll even get it done before the end of may!

So to all you quitters out there, good job! and keep up the good work...  Send some will power my way if you have any extra! (I'll do the same!)

Yea jevfro, Keep up the good work, You can do it and the benefits will be more than worth it. And more power to ALLwho are trying to go that route. Seems like an epidemic or an awakening. I don't know which. After what my Dad and I went through with my Mom, I get excited to hear of folks making the effort to quit.

Thanks, Bill. That's exactly my thinking.

I don't smoke in the house or in the car with my family, but I know how much it stinks. If I go a day or two without one and get in my truck, the smell makes me want to gag. I can smell a smoker walking in the hallway outside my office. If I could smell that when I'm an active smoker, it might be a little easier to quit.
