Used rattle can on my wife's cb350 earlier this summer. I had to strip 3 coats of paint off the tank and side covers first and then prep from scratch but after it was all primed I sprayed it with Duplicolor rattle can then topped it off with Spraymax 2k clear, color sanded any slight orange peal it had then hit it with polishing compound. I think it came out pretty good for a rookie painter.

Looks pretty nice! You did the proper preparation, and it shows. Most people who get poor results, i.e. wrinkling, etc. don't put the time and effort in it to do what you did. Nice job!!

I pretty much had to because the tank had a deep and long dent going across the right side of it so I had to get to bare metal to repair that (lots of dent pulling) and besides with the multiple coats of paint it looked horrible. Stripping the paint off the side covers was the challenge because I had 3 coats to deal with, the bike started out blue then red then light blue and I couldn't find an effective paint stripper that would strip the paint but not damage the plastic side covers so I had to resort to soaking the side covers in brake fluid which was time consuming but it did eventually strip all the paint without harming the plastic.

Now, there's a great idea! and it is probably cheaper than real paint stripper... brake fluid is VERY hard on paint, ask me how I know ;)

I had plans to paint my tank and side covers.  I searched around on this forum as well as other forums, paint forums included. A mini spray gun should probably be OK for a tank and side covers.
The expression HVLP is not always that High Volume Low Pressure. The compressor must have a tank that can deliver a good stable flow and compressor itself not running too hard causing fish eyes in paint due to water drops.

I bought 2 cheap Bergen Gravity FEED HVLP Mini SPRAY GUN. One with 0.8mm nozzle, the other with 1.0mm

The more expensive Devilbiss SRI would be better for a smaller compressor since it is specified to work with relatively low flow.

I saw all needs (good ventilated place, no dust nor insects) I ordered a new tank with side covers from Yamiya.
Spray candy need some skills and luck to get it right at first try. The paint is not cheap.

I have a small compressor, my 2 mini guns  and 2 tanks that need to be fixed. One of them is my K6 original tank I painted with professional gears for over 30 years ago. Free 2k primer and 2k red paint, only Sikkens 2k clear on my account. Today no access to a real spray booth with water fall behind, huge fans and oven.

I'll might spray them... my CB750 need a real K2 style tank. Now an OK looking K4 freedom green metallic tank to be used.
I can put a plastic tent inside my garage....

2k need a good paint stripper. The green politicians have banned methylene chloride which is the thing to use.
I was lucky to find a 5L pack last spring from a seller that could sell without need of professional certificate.

This is what I have, but from another seller .

I cringe when I hear of folks using brake fluid to strip paint off plastic parts.  Yeah, it works, but takes forever and you take a huge chance that it will literally soak into the plastic and ruin it for repainting.  If you used this method and escaped problems, you were very fortunate.  A side cover is so small..just sand it.  Even if it's been painted 3 times, start with 80 grit and it'll come off like nobodies business.  Finish with 180 and then 400.  One hour, tops.

1 hour tops with sand paper? No way, I had already tried. I don't know what paint was used on its previous paint jobs but what ever it was it wasn't coming off easy, I beadblasted the tank and even the beadblaster had to work at it. Using brake fluid didn't exactly appeal to me either at first and it was indeed time consuming and once all the paint was off I had to thoroughly wash and rinse the covers to make sure I removed as much residual brake fluid as possible but it did work for me at least.

Brake fluid is a great paint stripper, back in the 70's I got screwed by a little used car yard owner on a car that he sold me, so I filled a big arsed super soaker style water pistol with brake fluid and gave the first 3 rows of cars in his yard a good spraying. It was a nice warm summer night, so by the time the owner would have arrived the next morning, it would have been a sight to see...... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Here’ my Spraymax rattle can job, not bad even though I was a little impatient to have her done before riding season a few years ago. Next time, I’ll spray it with a sprayer, or maybe I’ll leave it to a pro. My bike is for riding, not showing!

Hey, Terry, I'm assuming the cars you hosed were steel.  That's different.  I was talking plastic specifically.  I've seen brake fluid ruin plastic whether it soaked in or made it soft, otherwise I wouldn't throw out a a warning.   I can safely sand down a pair in a hour or less..easily.  Done it a thousand times with good auto grade paper.

Ha ha, I wasn't disagreeing with you mate, I wouldn't use brake fluid as a stripper for plastic (or fibreglass) for the same reasons you stated, I was just re-telling one of my wonderful stories, from "Back in the day"............. ;D
