Hello from Upper Michigan
« on: December 04, 2017, 12:27:50 PM »
Hello everyone, and anyone

I found myself referencing this site for working on a '73 750 and figured I would join and maybe do a build thread. I'm sure I'll be asking for a little advice along the way!

My father purchased the bike new in 73. This was the day I picked it up!

Hello from the North side of Lake Superior.

Glad to see you are getting the bike out of mothballs.

Love it.  Here's my '73.  Looks like he and I shopped for the sissy bar the same place.
Welcome.

Thank you for the welcome. It's nice to see there's a few people relatively close. Some people don't even understand there is an upper peninsula of Michigan!

Hi Bert, that CB looks like it might be in pretty good shape underneath all that whatever-it-is, sawdust?

My father purchased the bike new in 73.
That is one of the best kinds of motorcycles to have.

I think it looks pretty crappy, but I will be glad to take it off your hands for you :). Seriously, to have one of your dads bikes is really cool! What are the miles on it. Maybe he has the original mufflers hanging in the barn too. Here's my K1 which looks pretty close to yours.

Beautiful bike Johnie! I will ask about the stock exhaust, that would be great if it was still around.

And yes, the bike was covered in sawdust.... it made a mess of some of the aluminum. But I guess I'll call it "petina" lol

Welcome.

Probably the moisture it would collect that did much of the damage, unless the wood were acidic...  consider yourself lucky if mice did not ravage the bike making nests.

Original exhausts rotted out pretty bad, so it may not be something around any longer.  So, don't keep your fingers and toes crossed to hard.

The bke looks pretty nice under all those cobwebs and sawdust.  Don't keep us in suspense too long.  Share some pics of what it looks like, warts and all. The aluminum may clean up on the buffer in some cases.

Don't rush out and buy tires, but don't go riding on those.  Hopefully they held air pressure.
How long has the bike sat?

Some oil in the cylinders before you try to start or kick it over.  Sometime the rings will rust to the cylinder liners...so a bit of oil and letting it sit after feeding it that is a good idea.

Patina is sometimes good, depends on what you want.  It cannot be recreated and they are original only  once is the adage.

I started a build thread, the first post has a little history on the bike.

Wow, cool.  We will have to get together sometime and talk shop.  My next thing on the bike is cosmetic repair.  There is a lot of surface rust on the chrome as the poor old gal was left outside for 2 years.  Then on to replacing all the cables.  Was thinking of trying to soda blast the engine cases.

Over the winter I am going to keep searching for the megaphones that are on the old Jardine 4 into 2 pipes.
