I recently bought a '75 CB750. I keep hearing about Fs and Ks. My title says Type:E, but my airbox says CB750F. What is the difference and what is mine. Thanks, Jimmy. pics

Hello Jimmy,

out here in Canada, the "E" usually was from the "engine" serial number. I've run across a few titles registered from the engine serial number as opposed to the frame serial number. I don't think it made too much difference unless one was to replace the engine. (as I have, but still have my original) :-[ ;D

Also, as I understand, the engine S/N's did not match the frame S/N's, which you should find on the steering head. Mind you that is here in the Great White North and it might have been different where you are.

Hope this helps.
Lou.

I'm thinking that we should add a section to this site somethin' like a "Restorer's Reference" with a set of pictures of stock models from each year and capacity. This would also need to be country specific. A big job. Any offers?

I can do '72 500 (UK) and '77 550K3 (UK)

Hi Steve,
For models produced by American Honda Motor Co., Inc., this information, and pics, are in a book called the "Honda Motorcycle Identification Guide 1959-1988".  Out of print, of course.  And, I only have a photocopy of this book, but I still find it useful.  I don't know if it is feasible place this data in a web site.  The book is copyrighted.

When was the book published? I'm less a legal expert than I am a bike mechanic (that should tell you a lot), but I seem to recall when researching copyright laws, there was a distinct break point date back in the 70's, mid to late, that if published prior to this date and not renewed, the copyright was 20 years. Again, not sure, any attorneys on board? If so, we will forgive your chosen occupation.  ;)

Do the pipes on this bike look like stock pipes? I figured they were aftermarket because I thought CB750s only came with four individual or a 4into1 and also it's running a little lean. Thanks, Jimmy.

I do have sections of the model guide on the website.

For the 750: http://sohc4.us/?q=node/112

The photos are really too poor to give you a really clear idea of the changes year-to-year and this information does not cover non-US models.  I'd love to put a comprehensive resource online.  There is a publication on the 750 that I believe covers a lot of the model differences including the european models - it might be titled something like 'CB750 Profile'.  Rene from the Netherlands sent me a copy years ago, but I can't locate it at the moment.

I think, (and Glenn can clarify this) but back in the dark ages, when we had the members gallery, you could search by member name, or by bike model, or by catagories such as "chopper" "custom" "stock" etc. so you could concievably (where is the spellchecker here?) look up "stock cb550 K" and see all the members who had uploaded pics of their bikes that fit this catagory. Course, it was labor intensive on Carlos's part, but it made for a great reference especially for colors and minor model changes. Someone way more tech savvy than myself would have to enlighten more as to what would be involved in this. I think when I did mine in '96 or so, it meant taking a picture, waiting for CVS to develop it, bringing it to my friends house to be scanned and saved on a 3.5 floppy, loading it on my 'puter and emailing it to someone blah, blah blah.
