registration in california
« on: December 21, 2017, 11:15:57 PM »
hey all,

i attempted to register my 72 cb500 in california over 7 years ago in los angeles but never got the VIN verified so i still have the original title.  i subsequently ignored the notices about re-upping the registration.  now i've finally got her street ready and i'm wondering if i should just go back to the DMV and pretend like i never attempted to register in the first place so i dont have to pay back fees.  i think my alternatives are to go to a car registration professional, or register it out of state in someone elses name and bring it back in again.  any advice?

thanks all!

If you got notices from the state for anual registration, the vin is in the system.  If you did not place the bike in non-op status, you will be required to pay all late penalties.  I think its something like 300% above standard anual fees. Perhaps even 600%.

The state extracts maximum money from its inmates.

One option is, as you say, transfer it to someone else in another state.  But, I don't think Cali will take it completely out of their records system for several years.  Once the vin returns to the state, all back fees are likely due, if it is still in their system.  They really like to close any loopholes to circumvent them getting paid.

I have successfully waived back fees when registering bikes. It is within the supervisor's discretion.

Once in the California system it's always in it, never gone. Socialists democruoght republic of California.
If you can show it's been unroad worthy they will usually remove any late fees.

I don't believe that statement is accurate.  I was told by CHP that vehicles drop out of the system after many years of inactive registration.

This is true. The second CB550 o bought came with a signed California title printed in 1990... the last time this bike was registered I was 3 years old... the guy at the DMV told me to ride it in and they will have it reentered into the system and be inspected by CHP.

They weren’t trying to charge me for 27 years of Kagel registration.
If you can't fix it with a hammer, it's an electrical problem... If it's an electrical problem, it's Cal's problem.

okay, thanks for the feedback.. i think i'm just going to go in and hope i get lucky that day with an amicable teller.  looks like there are methods for waiving back fees but my case of a half-completed registration is likely to throw some sand in my gears.  i will follow up here with the result.

Be very nice and as positive as you can at the DMV. They can help if they WANT to. At our DMV,  there is 1 lady who I will wait to see and another that I've learned to avoid if possible.  Good luck!

The normal clerks don't have authority to waive the fees. It is up to their supervisors, so ask and ask nicely.
