That doesn't look like mere corrosion.  Whatever the cause, that stem needs to be replaced.

You can get a swap stem from cognito.

i have a 98' front end that I can steal the stem from, or I could just use the 98' set up...Anyone know of the pro and cons of using the older fork or should I just swap the stem to the newer set up

It's difficult to provide more advice, because we don't know which model GSXR donor and which model CB recipient.

It you are installing onto a 550/500/650 front, the stock GSXR stem can be used.  If you are installing onto a 750, you will need a longer stem.

It is likely that a 1998 GSXR front will have conventional forks -- as opposed to the 2003 Upside-Down forks.  The 98 forks might be lighter (an advantage), but the 2003 will be slightly advanced -- though both front ends will be a leap ahead of the stock CB front.

It does not appear that you are concerned with the decreased offset (distance between the fork tubes and steering stem) of a modern front versus the stock offset of the CB.  Although a modern front will be an improvement to handling and braking, a smaller offset (35mm for the GSXR from the stock CB500/550 45mm or more for a CB750) will make the bike a bit more twitchy.  It will cost more, but you should think about triple trees to restore the offset.  Your bike, your skin/bones, so that's up to you.

Hey Sorry for a lack of information, both set of forks are traditional and not upside down. I guess my question was self explanatory considering the 03 will have newer components and thats that. I will be addressing the offset issue with this swap but only when $$$ permits.

The project bike is a 74' 550. Ill just press out the stem and stick it on the 03 forks.

Sounds like a solid plan for now. If you feel so inclined, you might re-name the subject and make this your build thread, so we can follow along and you can post questions, etc. as issues come up.

Welcome!
