Is ignition working correctly,  opens at 'f' and advances between the two lines on both sets of points?

Ignition is working fine.
Finally got the chance to ride it to work the other day. Was going great, went to turn onto the main road and it cut off. It had been stumbling some, but thought it was just bad gas or something that needed blown out.  Had to push it to an open area because the battery went dead. Couldn't get it to start back with a jump. It finally started, but with the petcock turn off. As soon as you turn the petcock on it would cut off. Finally made it back home but wasn't easy. Bike Buzz killed my day. :(
    I believe the floats are stuck. So guess what... carbs coming back off again.  :'(Something must have broken free and gotten into the main line and made its way to the main jet. I am so over this bike and ready to sell it. >:(
Is there another set of modern carbs that will fit the 650? Like off a Nighthawk. Its just a pain to get these carbs back onto the bike. The throttle cable are a #$%* to get on. I am hoping this will be the last time taking them off to fix something with these carbs. I really need this to run. We are packing house and moving out of state in the next couple of weeks. Was hopping to have it running so I could ride it a little before me move. If someone would make me an offer I think it would be gone. Really frustrated with the bike. So close, its teasing me ....
I really like the older inline fours. They sound amazing when you put a 4-1 exhaust on them. Sounds like an F1 car.

So the carbs came off again. ???
I think I found the problem. The accelerator pump diaphragm has a small crack on one side. It's not all the way thru the diaphragm. So it is leaking thru the rubber part to the other side. This was causing it to run rich. A specially when you try and accelerate. Other problem I found one float needle stuck. This was cause by the brass seat not being polish. Have a new part on the way for the accelerator pump. I am hoping this will be the last time I have to remove these carbs. :-[

OK it is now FIX! ;D
Receive my new accelerator pump kit today. Arrived a day early. The only problem was the shaft on the pump was too long. So measured the old one and cut it to size. No leaks!! And it works. Took it for a test drive and when you give it gas it goes. It has come alive. 8)  I guess the fourth time is the charm. By now I have the throttle cable removal and install down to a science. I also got smart and pre-filled the float bowls with gas. This way I know if its going to leak gas or not before installing them. I really didn't want to stop riding it, but the bugs are getting pretty thick. Just might try and ride it to work tomorrow. Weather said chance of rain in the PM. Just have to wait and see. So glad it is back on the road and running great. :D :)

 ;D ;D 8)I am on the road!! Bike is fix, running like a champ. :) So much fun riding it. Still have a lot to learn. But that's what makes this bike special. Knowing I did the work was done right and did it for Spare Change I collected in a Jar. With all the parts, tires, helmet, jacket, gloves and down to the last bolt. I am into it for about $878. I think I did pretty good. Only issues left to do is rebuild the front forks and replace the seat cover. A really nice vintage bike. Cheers... 8)

 :)Well I have been riding it now for a about a month now. Running into a little problem that I can't figure out. When stop and go to take off it stumbles. It is like it is getting too much gas. But once you up shift and feather the throttle it runs out. Driving down the rode it rides just fine. It is just when I am stop and take off.

There is something about having an old bike. Went for a ride the other day and park the bike for about a week. Went to start it up for the weekend and won't start. Turns over ok and wants to fire. But won't start. Now it is back firing just one time and man is it loud. We did have a lot of rain lately. But its under a cover and the bike is dry. What else could go wrong. Thinking it something to do with the ignition.

Oh the trials this bike has put on me. I finally broke down and bought a new seat cover. I have to say this was the first thing I have purchase outside of my bike budget. Thought it came out looking really nice.

Now I other issue that pop up. My front left brake caliper just lock up. I really would like to swap these dual brakes out to a more modern caliper. One that I can find parts for without any issues. Has anyone ever modify their bike for a newer set of calipers?

If the pistons aren't pitted/rusted, removing the old seal, cleaning out the groove and a new seal should remedy that problem.  good luck....Larry

 I've seen the pads rust on the edges and get sticky. check that. New ones sometimes you have to sand off the paint on the edges too.

Just read your posts on getting your bike going.  Congrats on sticking with it despite all the setbacks!  You have taken the time to figure things out and ask for assistance here on the forum. A joy for you when riding it is you know you did all the work to get it running!  The old bikes will always need care and attention to keep them running. Enjoy and ride safely.

cooldrum; thanks for the kind words. Yes it has been a long trying time and it seems it is never finish. I've been thinking about selling the bike in the effort of buying another bike. I need a bike that fits me better. My legs get cramp up and have to stretch out. Need a bike where my legs are more forward. Still love the bike. But I think it will better server someone else.

Spare Change bike is on the road again. But after setting for some time during the winter months it seems to have another issue. Cylinders 1-2 are not firing. After letting it idle a few the headers are cold. Which is telling me they are not firing. Coils read 2.5 ohms each. So wonder if I have an ignition points problem. But this doesn't make since because each point cross fires 1-3,2-4. So it might be still a carb issue? Ever see where 2 cylinders don't fire?

No points on the 650 and the waste spark is 1-4 & 2-3 I believe. Check the plug wires and caps it might not be ignition issues. If it sat laid up it could be a fuel issue. Maybe stuck floats or gummed up needle.

Plug a known good spark plug into the cap ground it to the engine and crank it to see if you have fire. If you got spark then go through the fuel system.

As for the cramping, get a set of freeway pegs or look into some forward mount controls.

My 84' Honda Sabre had chocolate milk for motor oil after sitting outside for 6 years before I got it. The inside of the motor was fine. I still cleaned the inside of the motor out and flushed out a lot of crud. That was 6k miles ago and it is still running strong.

No gravy here. Just an old bike that always needs something done to it. So went to pick up the bike from my temporary house to take it to my new house. (been homeless for over 9months) So it is still only running on 2 cylinders.  So the lack of power was an issue with loading it on the trailer. It stalled on me and I grab the front brakes to keep it from rolling back. Now the front right caliper is frozen and won't release. :-[ So had a heck of a time to get it on the trailer with the brake lock up. Probably wasted the clutch trying to get it in the trailer.   I just rebuilt the brakes last summer with new pistons and seals. Even installed a new master cylinder. I am thinking the old hoses are trash and causing debris to enter the system. Anybody got a good source for brake lines?

Probably right. I am just getting tried of taking these carbs off again. Makes like the 5th time. I think this time around I am going to replace the floats and maybe see about putting to inline filters on it. But the brake line thing has got me stump. Brakes should be pretty straight forward. Just wonder if my master cylinder could be the problem. Even though it is new,

It may your hose to the right caliper. If the hoses are stock they should be replaced. I use Spiegler lines.
