Greetings from another Toronto member

So the story goes ...

Been into bikes for 15 years, owned approx 12 in that time - some for riding, some for rebuilding. Along the way I purchased a 1982 cb650sc bike-in-a-box 6 years ago, rebuilt and sold it. Fast forward to last fall, the gentlemen is letting it go and gave me a call. I'm now the owner of my own rebuild, which is of course now scattered in parts across my back room - engine out, head off, pistons soaking in pin-sole - Ready for phase 3.

It started it's life as a cb650sc. Low compression & gumbed up carbs but was soon running like a champ. I picked up a tank & a few bits and turned it into a standard/custom. Hopefully the pics work.

This is pic is after being rebuilt as a nighthawk

Of course with any new member, there's gotta be a question ....

Cyl #3 REALLY smokes (sitting on the bike, from the left, the cyl with the tach cable). It gets worse once warmed up. It's light grey so thinking oil. Compression was good - 120 all round. Carbs synced perfectly and ran like a champ. I was thinking oil ring, but once dismantled, all looks good, nothing sticking.

Any thoughts?

And thanks all. I've been running VFR's & big cruisers but find myself doing more local runs so thinking that a nice mild scrabbler/cafe would be a nice fit.

Valve seal or seat? Have you done a leak-down test?

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. No leak-down test as was planning on doing the valves anyway, but thanks, will do my own version of the same and see.

I was thinking that compression was consistent so was really expecting a failed oil ring.

Heads are off so I take some seafoam and let it sit in the cylinder head overnight; any leaks and there's your answer - at least that'd the concept.  Of course don't forget to screw in the plugs :).
