There is most likely two finishes on your motor, the case, cylinders and head are painted, a respray does wonders.
The covers were not originally painted but sprayed with clear. The clear can be stripped off and then the aluminum can be polished to a mirror like appearance. Or vapor blasted to a nice satin finish.
