0 to 75mph
« on: January 02, 2007, 01:48:51 PM »
0 to 75mph then 0 to 80mph.

This is an onboard video.
http://www.salocal.com/sohc/836-video.htm

Some of you guys that've been around here for a while have seen me brag about my '76 Supersport and how fast it is with 836cc bore and billet cam.  When I moved here to Marfa, TX….I'd thought about letting it go.  It needs at least 2 rocker arms because they don't quite tighten, one of the carbs has a crack in it and it leaks oil between the head and cylinder (a little messy).

In the video though you'll see why I just couldn't part with it.
Sorry 'bout the camera angle, but the audio came out good, and I realize this post may get moved, but I wanted everyone to see it.

What'd you think of my Banshee?

Sorry, I pointed the camera back for the audio, which I felt was most important.  Pointing forward would increase the wind noise....with out the proper gear.

Cool video.  Did you put a stopwatch to it?   With a rolling start, it looked like 75 came up in about, what, 11 seconds or so?  I think that's probably faster than my wife's minivan.

The second came up to 80 from 2mph in 10 sec. from my watch...I think that's just fine for 75% throttle to 7900rpms.  Stop the clock at the end of 3rd, that's where I'm hitting the speed.

More like 5 to 75 mph, but who's counting. Sounds great. Thanks.

More like half a mile per hour, but who's counting.  I only use 75% of throttle and rpms of this 'ol thing, and I don't yank the throttle open (it's too old and I want it to last a long time), but thanks it does sound good.  I'm babying it, dude.  I don't want'a destroy it....or rebuild it.  I've only had it 6.5 years so far.

Let's see what ya'lls do.  More videos!!

Com'on Kev, he did say he was only reving it to 7900.
A stocker with 150lb rider will hit 75mph at the end of the eighth mile in 9 seconds.
The 836 should be down to 8 seconds.

Some of you guys just don't get it (some do)!  I could put this thing at a stop, rev it up and really put on a show.  Why do you think I'd do that to this beautiful old classic.  Maybe some of you don't mind spending gobbs of cash, but I like this bike just the way it is.  The top end was upgraded in '78 and it hasn't been cracked open since.  You guys think I wan'a tear it up, for why.  It'll last for years the way I run it and it's pretty damn fast at 3/4 throttle, dont' you think?

I ain't tryin' to race anybody.  Just enjoying it as long as possible with as little trouble.

That's right Sam, I figured you got the picture.  I put some mechanical detail on the page.  Sometimes I feel like some people just don't deserve to own one of these 'ol classics.  They should buy one of these new ones and tear it up.

Thanks! My trans is pretty sticky.  The bike was abused by someone along the way, but I've had 6.5 years to figure out how to get it smooth.  Heck, it's smoother runnin' it this way, than tryin' to run it with traffic.

The thread in the rocker where the adjuster stud goes thru....two of them are close to stripped, or at least where you can't tighten down the adjuster nut, but just a little.  If I tried to tighten them actually snug like the others they'd strip completely.  So those two are just barely tight enough, as long as I keep an eye on them...and don't spin too high rpms.  In the video, I only came close to 78-7900 rpms once or twice.  If you listen closely, you'll notice most of the time I'm running it closer to 72 to 7500.

....but I ride my '77 Goldwing most of the time these days, and get on the CB about three times a week and do what you saw on the vid to keep the cylinders cleaned out, only a 10 minute ride there and back.  I know I'm going to have to pull the engine and replace those two rockers...not to mention the oil seals, but that's all it needs.  I'm not in a big hurry to do it.

To an extent that's nomal on these bikes. Mine does it some, except when I'm cranking it up.....no syncro, it's a dogged transmission.  The dogs built onto the gearing bite together firmly and are squared off with a little radious at the edges.  You may check your clutch adjustment if you haven't done so already.
http://www.salocal.com/sohc/tech/clutch/cth7.htm

When the dogs wear out they tend to kind'a bounce off eacher, rattle, pop out of gear.......changing the oil helps too.

Sohc,

The video sounds great and looks cool, you can see how quickly (on the second run) you leave behind that side road.  I have audio of my bike hitting a Ton, but the wind noise is a problem.  Someday this coming summer, I am going to mount my digital video recorder to my bike and "show-off" a little.  But first, I need to figure out how to mount the recorder without buying one of those $100 gadgets.

Hey Ed, That is one sweet ride. No doubt you want to make it last. I mean, why push it to
the limit? To me, A person who appreciates his (or her) ride (no matter what it is) is gonna take
care of it. Maybe take it out for a GOOD run now and then but, use some common sense in the
process. Who built it, You. Who's got to take care of any problems, You. Who's gonna be paying
for it, when it goes down, You. The way I see it, You've got respect for the bike and that's got to
be understood. Ed, You're The Man!!  Thanks for posting this. Quite a bike, I'm Jealous. ;)

                                                            Later on, Bill :) ;)

Sounds sweet. Next video facing forward so we can see the front wheel off the ground and pointed at the tach and speedo. Power shift at 10K. No letting off the throttle. I WANNA HEAR IT SCREAM !! (just don't miss second)

Enjoy your bike how ever you ride and take care of it. Are you sure the threads are stripping or are the adjusters ready to break and snap like one of mine did?
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Thanks guys, I knew there were somebody(s) out there that'd appreciate it.  I put in new adjusters and nuts.....can't tighten them down on the #3 intake and #2 exhaust, just a little, but not snug.

I built everything but the engine.  Found it that way rotting and rusting in a junkyard.  It was in bad shape, so you can imagine what a surprise it turned out to be.

Oh...It's an older MAC, painted header purchased in late 2000 before they went to a megaphone.  It's more like a canister type muffler only about 10 or 11 inches long.  I've still got the original in storage...just re-chromed, but this MAC is better tuned and certainly sounds better.

Hey Bill, I wan'a see some progress on that Goldwing!

... you can see how quickly (on the second run) you leave behind that side road.
Sparty

Yea, I rolled on the throttle just a little quicker in the second run, but still not over 3/4.  I used to give it a bit more, but I just don't want to do any major repair.  I doubt that this engine could be reproduced by anyone but an expert....I'm an ok mechanic - yea, a good air-cooked VW mechanic, but i haven't done much high-performance and don't want to start now.

I shortened the video a tad for better downloading, and zoomed in a bit........
