Hello Everyone,

My name is Joe, 53 yrs old and live about half hour north of Chattanooga.  I have been a bike nut all my life and love all brands - especially the old stuff.  I have an antique Indian, a couple of antique Harleys, and two XL600Rs but recently picked up a 71 CB750 (from Craigslist in Alabama).  The 750/4 has always been on my cool list.

The bike is in ok shape, I think about 10k original miles and still has the stock exhaust on it.  I'm pretty sure the engine has never been apart.  The biggest problems are the handlebars forward.  Maybe someone hit something long ago or started to customize and gave up but the speedo has a good dent in it, tach and ignition switch are missing and the upper tree has a crack in it.  Fork tubes are rusty too.

I removed the carbs and cleaned them, my experience tells me the bike has been sitting at least 10 years but probably much longer.  I hooked up a makeshift ignition system (jumpered a wire from the points to the negative side of the coils and ran a hot lead to the coils).  I have spark.  My plan is to use a gas IV bottle to see if I can start the bike to see how it sounds.  If it sounds good I will soldier on.

I am hoping to tap into some knowledge resources here and hopefully find many of the missing parts.  I think all of you in advance and look forward to learning!

As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Thanks for the welcomes guys,  I just returned from the garage where I hooked up a temporary gas supply and tried to start the beast.  It did start but only with starting fluid - a no go on the gasoline.  I do not have the air filter box on though and I know Hondas can be funny about running without the stock airbox.  So, next step will be the airbox and will see if I can get it to run on gas and for more than just a few seconds.

You may have to clean the slow jets again.  The floats could be out of adjustment. You could also have air leaks between the carbs and the motor.  You are not the first one to have the symptoms described so keep plugging away and searching.

Hello Everyone,

I realize this introduction is probably getting a little long-winded but I though I would update as to the progress.

I was lucky to find a low mileage 1973 parts bike nearby for a great price.  I swapped the front end over and I think it has been shortened by an inch - it looks cool.  Also the rear wheel has been re-laced with a 16' Harley rim and a fat tire.  Looks great also.

The bike now starts easily but will run at super high RPMs with the choke off.  If I turn the choke on to second to the top click I can get it to idle but its too rich.  My guess is the intake boots aren't sealing well and I'm also doing this with the air box off and I know  that can make a big difference.  Today I will check for intake leaks and order new boots if need be

Welcome Joe.   Start a thread in the Project Shop area, you will get more views and help there. 

Try spraying WD40 on your rubber air boots, if RPM rises, you have an air leak.   

K1's are good bikes and sought after, I have 1 that I will be restoring later this year.

Thank you!

The problem was the rod that sticks up through the carb top and pulls the slide up.  Number 2 carb was bent and not allowing the slides to go down all the way.  It idles perfectly now :)
