Transferring money...bank to bank
« on: January 13, 2018, 04:48:47 AM »
For two years now, my girlfriend has been transferring money straight to my checking account on payday,  for household bills and such.
She has Bank of America, I have a local credit union. Initially,  it was transferred using ClearExchange. I'd get an email notice and a day or so later the funds showed up in my checking account.
ClearExchange recently became Zelle.  For whatever strange reason,  Zelle doesn't work with my bank. They want a debit card and say mine isn't compatible.  My bank says there's nothing unusual about the cards they use. Zelle won't transfer to a routing number, which is how it was done before.

Anyway....we need a quick, easy, free or nearly free way to transfer funds.

PayPal charges big fees unless it's from PayPal account to PayPal account,  and it would require multiple steps on her end and my end. It could take nearly a week to verify and transfer funds without fees.

What is a safe, fast,  trustworthy app or service that will allow her to transfer funds from her checking account to my checking account?

I don't know. I've asked her to contact them directly and see if there's a way to do this. But she has to do that....i can't do it for her.

Someone suggested setting up a bill payment through BofA,  but since I'm not a business they want to mail me a paper check. Or use Zelle...

And Zelle isn't currently an option for me.

Tried to call the customer support number on my debit card and see if it's possible to get one that is compatible  but they're closed for the weekend.  Only lost or stolen card division is available right now.

I still use checks for that.  Our credit union app offers mobile deposit, so I sign the check, take a picture of it, and the money's in my account immediately.

If bank of uhhmurica wasn't notoriously anti-coinbase, I'd suggest cryptocurrency.
The gdax exchange will transfer bitcoin/ethereum without making the user pay the network fee.
with any luck, ya'll could sweep in a little profit too.

What happens though, if you deposit say $1,000 worth of ether, and before you can get to it to pay the bills, the value bombs? You just be hung out without the bill money?

I've always found wire transfer about te most expensive way to move money around. From bank to bank in US it should be free but tere is always a 'catch' somewhere.I guess girlfriend earns too much to open a credit union account? Basically, go to BoA tell them you WILL close accounts if something can't be worked out., if there is over $50,000 in savings, investments, etc, they will figure out a no cost plan. If you need to send cash oversea's, the cheapest way is still a Paypal account

My problem with PayPal has been putting it in, I have no credit card. So it takes a week or 7 business days.. enough to kill an eBay deal.
When  I take it out, I think its 3 to 5 days... but for me it's usually here in 2 days, and I am in  Canada. That at a credit union.

I have my bank account linked to my PayPal. If I transfer money out of PayPal to my bank at 4:00 Thursday, it's there at 7:00 Friday morning, and vice versa.

Yeah, screw BOA. We finally left them a few years ago to go with a local credit union. I never had a choice to start with since they bought out my bank way long ago.
Go with a good local credit union that will work with yours on these types of payments.

that's some weird #$%*, how hard do these #$%*ers want to make it.

I know the Australian banking system ain't perfect but here all we have to do is open the bank app on the phone, go to transfer/pay money, put in the BSB (bank ID number), the account number, hit pay and its done. between any bank or credit union, instant send.

and I don't think anyone in Australia has seen a paper cheque in about 10 years, I don't think its even an option with banks here anymore (or if it is they'll make you pay extra and it'll take 10 business days to clear....)
i blame Terry

dips happen.  bitcoin moves up and down a lot.  like the tide.
ethereum and litecoin are a little less wild.
Just doing wallet transfers and cash outs, theres less risk of losing value.  Only exchange and sending fees

May I suggest you get a BOA account and get her to give you a debit card. You can simply take the cash out of the ATM there without any fee and walk over to the teller and deposit it. When you get middlemen in there you put yourself at risk.
