phone glass screens
« on: January 12, 2018, 12:34:12 AM »
anyone ever tried replacing their own smart phone glass if its cracked?my wife dropped her Samsung s4 ages ago and it got an annoying crack, then she dropped it again recently and the glass looks like a #$%*ing jigsaw puzzle with a few pieces missing!
she decided to just get a new phone and was going to throw the old one out,it still works so I kept it as a spare,i thought about getting a repair kit for it but first I thought id try and get the old glass off, lotta horror stories online etc but I thought if I ruin it its straight in the trash anyway,so I gave it a shot with my wifes hairdryer and a stiff plastic little note pad cover i got the glass off easy in about 10 minutes, then it took about 45 minutes to remove all the old glue and really clean the screen underneath the glass ready for the new screen, ive ordered a new glass that comes as a kit with all the pry tools you need and uv glue and little uv flashlight for 22 bucks!its only gonna be a spare but im still using a perfect s3 that's clean as a whistle!this is how cracked the glass was before I lifted it off,it came off quite easy with that plastic sheet, had to reheat once or twice.

Let me know what you find out Dave I've a tablet that has a big crack running across it, that still works and I'm going to re-purpose it as a sensor for the sump pump in my basement. There is Apps out there that allow you to use old and broken phones out there as cameras and other sensors, I think it would be spiffy to have a snowfall sensor, you know camera points out window at multi coloured stick and triggers when a certain height is reached any how have fun.

My wife and daughter got into a little scrabble last month, my phone got in the middle somehow [I was outside]

Screen got cracked and no one knows what happened...WTF?!

Anyway, my buddy owns a phone repair business, I just brought my phone to him and it was fixed in 30 min or so.  He makes it looks easy but does it everyday.

I've repaired several iphones for people. It just takes a little care, patience, and tiny, tiny screwdrivers.
Thanks to the internet you can usually find illustrated repair guides for practically anything. :)

My daughter smashed her iphone screen.  I fixed it for $32 using a kit that includes the needed tools bought off amazon.  There are many how-to videos on youtube. A little fiddly but it isn't a bad job.  The screen isn't an apple part, but it works just fine.

I just bought the whole screen and digitizer rather than messing with the broken glass.  It didn't cost much more.  I had to transfer the home button over to the new screen, but the proximity sensor, camera and speaker were already assembled.  Made it a lot simpler.  $32.99 shipped which seems pretty cheap for what you get.
