Cb550 resto mod
« on: January 13, 2018, 10:00:50 AM »
I started a thread for this last month before the site crashed. I'm just now actually getting started on it, so I thought I'd get a new thread started as well.

I haven't been buying a lot of sohc4s lately and have been busy with honda twin and single projects. I was looking mostly for a 400f and alternately for a 350f or 550. I ended up finding both a 350f and 550, but no 400f. So the 550 will be up first. Its a 76 k model, showing 15k and change on the odometer. It's not running, so that will be the first thing to address. It's reasonably complete, but missing a few little things.

The long term plan is to do a big bore engine build, since I've never done one. I'd also like to modernize it with suspension and electronic upgrades. The short term plan is to get it running on the cheap so I have it to ride this summer and make a few mods along the way.

So far, I've picked up a nice 550f tank to put on. I just like the shape a little better. I'm also planning to put up the motogpwerks 4 into 1, if I ever see one for sale. I have a set of cr26 carbs that came with a bike I parted out a while ago. I'm thinking about putting those on, but would I see any benefit over the stock carbs on a stock motor?

If I don't run into any major issues this should be a pretty quick project.

Sounds like a good plan, Dave, subscribed.  Seem to remember another member was getting ready to buy a 550 MotoGP pipe, you may want to give Chris a call and place an order.  I love mine...

I've tried emailing a couple times with no reply. I suppose I'll give him a call.

I got some parts I'm not using taken off today and looked it over pretty. The wiring looks to be pretty thoroughly f-ed up. Unfortunately, I've sold all of my good 550 wiring harnesses, so I've got to decide if I'm going to try to fix it or if I want to go ahead and do motogadget stuff now.

So this build is quickly changing direction. I decided to buy a good bit of Cams race bike that he's parting out, so I guess I'll be going all out on this from the beginning. I'm going to be running the stock motor still because I just can't afford to build it right now, but I'll try to tackle that in 2019. My next update will be in about 2 weeks when we meet up to finalize the deal and well go from there.

I picked up my haul of parts from mister Cameron yesterday (thanks for a good deal and meeting me part way). I've now got a pretty good start to this project. The next step is going to be finishing stripping down what is now my parts bike so I can get the roller up on the table. Then the real fun begins.

What you see above StevO. Gsxr front end, wheels, swingarm, frame and seat, carbs, and shocks. It was a very good deal.

^ what he said.

I've got a long shopping list of parts to go and a little work on the frame. I'd like to find someone that can make me a nice carbon fiber front fender and rear hugger. I need to make some engine decisions as well. I don't have the $ for a hi-po engine build, but I'd like to at least do some mild top end work to make use of the cr26s. I'm thinking about maybe doing the stage 2 top end kit from dynoman and some porting.  I'm thinking the bottom end should be fine as is.

Those are some nice parts.  That CMR swingarm is a NICE upgrade.

does anyone know a good source for nice stainless or titanium fasteners? I would like to replace every nut and bolt with nice new stuff. I looked at www.probolt-usa.com. They have really nice stuff, but its way expensive. like $10 per bolt expensive.
