GRRR!!! Ignition woes

So. I decided to replace my worn out points plate with new(ish) components. The plate is a very snug fit. 1-4 got a NOS contact. 2-3 got a almost new breaker. I have power to the points, and spark at the plugs. These are TEC components and have been gapped properly. I do not have a test light to set static timing, but no matter where I turn the plate, no joy. I specifically bought this stuff to serve as a test bed to compare newish items against my project of replacing just the worn phenolic blocks on other TEC points. I swear this machine is protesting against the new 17 tooth front sprocket that I just installed today. Not really. But it IS irritating.

12v lightbulb with socket and a couple wires...wahlah...test lamp

guessing you probably got the points/condensor leads attached wrong somehow because the bike should start with the points plate in nearly any position

I'm working the old vs new issue right now. If the "old" plate fires the bike then I know I haven't created a "new" issue other that the "new" points plate.

And yes. That light is going to be my next tool purchase. I just bought an old school sears penske timing light that had my bike running crisp. That Innova POS went out with the trash 2 weeks ago.

you had to disconnect the leads to change points plates, right?
If it works good, it looks good...

Yessir. I may have had the 2-3 wrong? I think I had the orientation from the condensers wrong. Maybe combined with wrong timing all the way around, I just drained the battery too far. I hooked up my battery charger/booster and it runs again. I will leave it to trickle charge tonight and try the new set up again tomorrow. I think you may be right about the isolater positioning. It was after that change and boosting the battery that the bike fired. I still don't understand how I was getting spark readings at the plugs the other way around. Hmmm???
