Tyre Wear - are they worn out?
« on: January 03, 2007, 04:16:22 PM »
How do I know when to replace my Continental rear tyre with a tread pattern like the one on the right in attached photo? I have lots of tread left on sides - maybe I need to drink more and weave constantly along the highway to get maximum tyre use!

Dont know what he minimum tread depth is in your locale, but here the DOT will fail you if you have any two consecutive wear-bars showing at surface of tire. However, any sane rider will replace their tire before it gets to that. Tires are cheap life insurance!

chicken strips aside, you should replace tires when you can see abe lincolns whole head after sticking the penny in the tread.  also any dry rot or loss of plyability is cause for replacement as hard rubber dont stick.
mostly i would say the good rule is- dude, if you have to ask, you should replace 'em.

Do you see or feel cupping , or is tire a bit squared-off? Does your bike sit a little too upright on its sidestand because circumference has decreased? If your rear has over 5000 miles, its academic; get a new tire. Nothing beats the feeling of fresh skins.
