choke cable on a '77 CB750F2

I need help re-connecting the choke cable on my bike. The manual's insructions are confusing. When the choke is off, should the butterflies be wide open? That is, should the be parallel to the ground? The manual says that when the choke knob is pulled as far as it shold go (choke full on), the butterflies should fully close. Ok, I get that, but if I adjust the cable so that the butterflies JUST close, the clamp that holds the cable in position is clamping down on the black cable instead of the chromed cable end. If I pull on the cable so that the chromed cable end is held by the clamp, the butterflies don't open fully when the choke is off. Terry, other F2 owners, a little help, please?

I set mine so that when the knob full down, the butterflies are wide open (parrallel to the ground).  When you pull the knob all the way out, the choke butterflies should block the intake.
There is a friction knob at the base of the choke knob rod.  This adjusts how easy it is to move.  Loosen that up during installation to get full range action.  Afterward tighten it up so it will hold it setting.  Don't let the fast idle cam limit the travel.  Hold the twist grip open a bit to eliminate its drag during adjustment.
