76 cb550 harness
« on: January 17, 2018, 07:33:49 PM »
I am,finally getting to building my cafe bike. I have almost every part i can use from 4into1.com but for some reason they dont sell a 76 harness. 74-75 and 77-78. What is the difference in harnesses? I am stripping the bike down anyway so couldnt i make a 77 harness work? I am upgrading the ignition, lights and charging system, so will it matter much? I am good with electrical so figuring out the differences shouldnt be an issue. Just would like a new harness so its reliable. Any help is appreciated.

The 76 cb550 k harness is unique for that year, and different from the F harnesses.

What wire diagram will you use for wiring?  Or don't you believe you will ever need a diagram for your cafe?

To me a cafe bike screams few stock components.  A stock harness is intended to interface with stock components.  So what is missing here are your functional requirements for a custom harness.

Fyi: the 76 uses a diode to keep the neutral light when the clutch is pulled in.  Will you use the clutch switch?
The 77/78 runs wires outside the bars and has a block connector for each bar control. The 76 uses bullet connectors. Earlier harnesses wire to a starter safety module, so there are more wires for the left side panel to control the starter solenoid.

Probably have to hack up any harness you get, to match the hacked up parts on your custom bike.

What you could do is look at the wire diagrams for the 76 and compare them to the harness model you think might work for you.

Figures I have a bike with a unique harness. I have a wire diagram and a book and it looks that the wire colors are the same mostly. Why wouldn't a 77 harness work if I used 77 components? The 77 looks to use bullet connectors as well. I would love to buy a new harness but I guess I can just go thru mine and check all the connections. It only has 6300 miles and it sat in a shed for years and no signs of degradation really. I want to go with a solid state rectifier/regulator, new blade type fuse block, new starter solenoid, battery cables and electronic ignition from pamco and would like solid wiring so its reliable. So what about a 75 harness?? I also plan to get new switches for the bars so I could go with 550f switches or maybe 77 switches etc.

What TT said. Sounds like he knows them pretty well and explains why.

I have a wire diagram and a book and it looks that the wire colors are the same mostly.

Which wire diagram are you using?  From the Honda shop manual?  The supplements show the specifics for all the wire harnesses.

Why wouldn't a 77 harness work if I used 77 components?
Of course, the more 77 components you have, the more a 77 harness will connect without much issue.
I haven't done it. But I think with the 77 bar controls, it might plug right up.

I know the 77 has block connectors.  They are on my K3.  And I can see them depicted on the wire diagram.   The diagrams don't show the wire lengths and reach of the wires.

The 77 looks to use bullet connectors as well.
It uses bullet connectors in lots of places.  But, the bar controls are block connectors.  Of course, you CAN cut them off and crimp on bullets from vintageconnections.com

So what about a 75 harness?? I also plan to get new switches for the bars so I could go with 550f switches or maybe 77 switches etc.
As I mentioned, the 75 still uses the Starting Safety module.  Several more wires for that.  What will you do with those?

The F harnesses uses a junction box to collect various connectors located under the tank on the left side, rather than all inside the headlight bucket.   This makes the wire length of whatever plugs into it there different than the K models.

Anything can be made to work.  Just takes time and effort.  But, if you are trading money for time savings, you may not get what you want.

I'll warn you that if you make a bastard wire harness that doesn't match any of Honda's diagrams, neither you or anyone else on this forum will have an easy time of locating faults a year from now.

I must say, with your description of your existing harness, I don't know why you need a total replacement.  Were it me, I take each connector apart, clean them, coat them in dielectric grease, and reassemble.  I mean you are taking stuff apart anyway...

I will stay with my harness and go thru it and make sure its sound. I am an electrician so troubleshooting bastard wiring isn't that bad, I do it all the time for machines that don't match the prints but I know what you are saying for troubleshooting. I understand now what you are saying about the differences with the f harness over the k harness. Going by pictures online I see what you mentioned above. I will just upgrade the rectifier/regulator and go with a blade fuse block and make up a new stator harness from the alternator to the rectifier. Thanks for the tips and advice.
