Widest largest tire on a 77cb750
« on: January 09, 2018, 07:33:59 PM »
Disclaimer: tried to talk my friend out of it but he refuses to listen to reason and he demands to pay me to install two of these horrifical handling archaic tires because.....survey says:They look cool.  BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO......

What is the absolute largest Firestone Deluxe Champion tire I can fit on his bike. Its a 77' cb750 and I realize a standard fender is not gonna work up front.

Again- NOT MY IDEA. GUY WON'T LISTEN TO REASON.

thanks

Not sure about Firestone, but it has been documented on this forum that a 330mm tire was installed on a highly customized 750!

Measure the un-alterable space available and buy accordingly.

Easy enough... To easy hahahaha!

From my searching the web looks like 140 max wide on a stock 17in rim on a 77 swinger. Will measure tomorrow to make sure that is real life applicable

After some digging it looks like they dont even make these firestones in a 17 so Id either have to adapt a 18 inch rim from a pre 77 or find another seriously chunky tire in a 140ish range. Can you just lace a 18 rim to the 17 hub .77 swing arms are longer right?

OK... the Firestone Deluxe Champion tire comes in 16" and 18" rear tire sizes, with the widest being a 5.00-16 tire. This will necessarily mean lacing up a 16" rim, or purchasing a whole rim and hub already laced up. A popular old school thing was to lace up a Harley rim. The 4.50-18" rear is also available, largest size for an 18" rim. Again, find a rim that you can swap out onto his hub, or find a whole rim and hub assembly already done. Is this till a drum brake rear, I take it? If so, the least amount of work would be to find a hub/rim assembly that would work, and swap out the sprocket carrier if you have the 10mm offset sprocket on the '77 Cb750. Then purchase the Firestone for it.
THEY ALSO HAVE A 4.00-19, WHICH BRINGS US TO THE INSANE RIM SIZE OF 19" FOR THE BACK LOL... so, there are options.
I personally, wouldn't lace a rim when there are used rim/hubs out there for modest pricing. Find him a good rim and hub assembly, mount the 4.50-18" or the 5.00-16" and get him the 4.00-19 for the front. If he doesn't want to mess with fenders, they do make a 3.25-19 front also, and that might be the best one of the bunch. For a good handling bike with the look he wants, go with the 3.25-19 front and the 4.50-18 rear. My thoughts... have fun!

Btw thanks for the thorough excellent advice. I am on the hunt for a 16 harley so can run the 5.0 tire. The earlier 76 back as I understand it would be a direct swap long as I switch the sprocket carrier ....does that sound right?

My friend Pat may have a brand new rim and hub assembly for a CB750, bur he isn't sure whether it is a 16" or 15" rim. He is going to the shop later today to feed Henry his cat, and he will look and give me a call. If it is the right size for you, he would want $250 for the whole drum assembly and rim. It has never been on a bike, according to what he just told me! It would save a lot of labor and lacing spokes...

Sadly it would just be blacked out...  Thanks for the thought but I think that would be putting lipstick on a pig so to speak.
A hondachopper guy might wet himself over that though. So far in searching I now steve-o is sitting on one and I found a crusty one on ebay for 75$ or best offer...

Make the chain as long as possible to keep the assembly back in the wider part of the swing arm.  I've had a 16X5" M&H slick on my old drag bike on a Harley rim. It just barely fits.

So I just found this out...

Duro makes a vintage looking 16x 5.10 tire and a matching 19x 4.0 which looks like it has to be a better safer tire and the firestones and at half the price ...I think my friend will go for it. Question is will a 16x 5.10 tire fit in a 77 cb750 swingarm. I have read confirmed that the 5.0 does and I plan on pulling it all the way out towards the rear with a longer chain. If that extra .1 will fit I think we have an all around better tire and still looks great . Thats a win-win.

Looks can be deceiving... Duro isn't a better safer tire than the Firestone. But, it IS cheaper. I would trust the Firestone OR the Avon way before the Duro. If I was going to look at my bike in the living room, I would choose the Duro, or if I was building a TT bike (Tavern to Tavern) where i wouldn't care about putting  miles on it, sure, the Duro will fill the bill. But, they really aren't the best tire out there. Go for the Avon or the Firestone. JMHO.
Charlie

EDIT: After looking at pricing and availability, the Duro is probably where I would go also... The Coker Firestone replica tire is cool, but at $150 each, not so much... the Avon is probably the best, but again, $150 not so much... Duro can be had for both front and rear for about $130-150... and are probably ok for what your friend wants to do with them hopefully... I read reviews on them , but I kinda have mixed feelings about someone who would give a 4 or 5 star rating on looks alone, and not even have any riding time on them. Every review I have seen, have no actual riding experience with them... just that they look good. Their bicycle tires have mixed reviews, some say good, some say not manufactured round, and not too many durability reviews, which is moot as they are for bicycles lol...

I found em for $75 at old bike barn or bike bandit cant recall now.
I read alotta reviews from old harley and indian riders that have ridden on em for 30 years....or was that the avons(prolly the latter) ? Lol, they are $75 and cant be worse than the firestones!lol.  The question remains if a 5.10 wide tire will fit though...

If you can get them for $75 a pair, thats very good, I was looking on Bikebandit, and the pair was $130 or so... anyway, they are a TAL sidewall, and that is the consideration when you are looking at fitting that 5.10 width into your swing arm. As the other fellow said, pull it back in the chain adjustment as far as you can, it will probably fit. Good measurements, if you can find them foe total height of tire and width will help you figure that out.
