Tips for removing stripped screws from points plate
« on: July 08, 2018, 01:10:51 PM »
I’m replacing points and condensers on my points plate on 78 cb550.

Some of the screws on the plate - points screws and 2-3 plate screws - are pretty stripped and won’t come off.

I’ve already ordered Allen screws replacement set. After wd40, what’s the best way to get those out?

A small, very sharp chisel. With a small hammer try to create a cut or notch coming in at 90 degrees. Then turne the punch about 45 degrees to side , tip pointing the direction of screw coming out. Then hold tight against  the notch, start tapping and seevif it starts to move. Wont need to move far to get loose.
Small vise grips, work good, jaws must be good. And screws should be changed.

Also an impact driver. Not an air tool, but the hand ones. I have one with a set of JIS bits and makes quick work of removing stuck screws.

You can turn the screw head into a slot with a dremel tool and a cut off wheel.  Then use a regular screw driver to take it off.
Of course some screws you cannot get proper access to do this.
