Ducati 900ss
« on: January 20, 2018, 03:32:42 PM »
I just made an impulse buy and picked up a 95 900 ss. I dont know much about them or if they're good bikes, but it looked like a good deal. It's got just over 21k on the clock. PO says the valves and timing belt were serviced 500 miles ago. It runs and sounds good. I'm hoping it was a solid buy and not something I'll regret. Does anyone here know anything about them?

Haha. I certainly hope I don't hate it, but I guess it wouldn't be the first bike I bought and hated

Here is a start, Ducati forums a must. Service manual a must.

http://www.ducatitech.com/2v/sp_cr_faq.html

I have sold my Ducati but I will say they are fun. Loved mine. Was looking at a 900SS and had quite a few bookmarks on the model. Deal feel through and since selling my Monster have deleted most of them.

I would still check timing belts. Plenty of “how to” videos and not that hard to do.

In GOD we trust, everything else we check.

Congrats on a lovely motorcycle. Is it the SP model?

Thanks, I've started browsing some different forums. Seems most love them despite it being "slow."
It's an SP model

Great! You bought the right model.

Love/ hate model however most love them. Ducati MS is a great resource on this model.

Story:

I was going to buy model number one. Yep, first one, bought overseas. It was then shipped to the States and eventually traded in.

Several owners later it ended up on CL in Phoenix. I talked with the owner and he said he got a phone call on it. The guy on the other end said “I’ve been looking for you a long, long time.”

Turns out the caller was the original owner who bought the bike new and had it shipped here when he moved. Pretty cool stuff thus why I didn’t buy it. Everybody was happy, happy and he deserved it, not me.  Bike was shipped back East.

Somewhere I have pictures with the Alps in the background when it was brand new.

I had a 96 SS and I found it to be a fun ride.  Lovely engine with great sounds.  If it has not had 2 teeth added to the rear sprocket. I would do it.  Peps her up a lot.  Some say the seat sucks, but I thought it was as comfortable as my 92 VFR.  I found the SS to handle very well, but any 600 from the same time period will have more power.
Best thing was  that in the Midwest a Ducati was rare.  Plus, the red is great

That's a cool story, thanks for sharing. That would have been a really bike to have.

This will be my first sport bike. I've never even ridden one. I'm sure it will be quite an experience. If only I lived in a state without snow

Haha. I have a buddy in Tennessee saying the same thing.  We get some random warm days, like today, so I'm sure I'll get a chance to ride it at some point after it gets here. I want to get the wheels powder coated before the weather gets nice too. They're red, I'm not really feeling that

Ducati’s, for the  most part, are all geared hgh. Just the nature of them. I played with gearing and went back  to stock. It liked 4000 and above. Below forget it. Stock gearing works best once you find the sweet spot.

Yes, would of been a nice one. Needed quite a bit of work but to have it go back to the original owner after so many years is coolness in my book.

Thanks. I'm unsure how I feel about the red wheels. I don't hate it, but I don't think I like it. I may end up getting them powder coated

Not bad, I've never named a bike. I was thinking red for my other ducati too. I might have to pick a different color now
