Puddles Pity Party
« on: January 22, 2018, 11:28:53 AM »
We've lost a lot of our musical icons at least from my generation, 60+. Alvin Lee, Joe Cocker, Leon Russel, Greg Allman, Glen Campbell, etc.  Not to mention Eric Clapton getting peripheral neuropathy so bad he can barely play and Linda Ronstadt getting Parkinson's rendering her voice to "useless" as she puts it herself.

But here's one that that reversed the trend for me. Just discovered In the last season of Americas Got Talent, though he has evidently been performing and touring as Puddles for quite some time.

Hope this puts a smile on some faces.   ;)

Mike is awesome.
His cover of Lorde's Royals lets you know the writing is not at fault; you just have to put it in the right hands to get the maximum effect.

22.8M Hits. Awesome for real.  He makes the song his own. Have you heard his Sound of Silence?

I've been a fan for a couple years now. Post Modern Jukebox, who he recorded Royals for is also worth checking out.

I've followed him for while and had hoped he'd go further on America's Got Talent, but I guess he didn't fit the "pop" mold and most of the audience didn't get him. Here's my 2nd favorite behind Royals: At least one of the judges got him, he and Howie Mandell performed together in Las Vegas in November.

Yep, big Mike belts them out better than most and often better than the originals, as great as some of those originals may have been.
It's a strange that a character, PPP, has gained him so much popularity when he has had the same voice and done similar songs for about 20 years.
That's showbiz and the power of Youtube for you.
It's cheaper to learn from someone else's experience but first you have to learn to tell the difference between a fact and a Furphy.

Red Skelton, a clown himself was big on the sad clown icon. Lots of paintings, etc.

As to Puddles (Mike Geier) I haven't read anywhere that he explains it. I assume that as good as he is, he needed something to set him apart. In his own mind as well as the audiences. I've seen him sing as Big Mike and his band, and he's just not as dominating as he is in the clown suit.

I mean, a 6'8'' giant in a sad clown suit, come on.

I think its a perfect schtick.

This video gives a little of the back story:  I read somewhere that his mother suggested and made the first clown suit for him.

Thanks for the background.  A friend of mine has been a fan of his for years. And, yes, he isn't half as interesting (visually) out of the clown costume and makeup.

I just found out that he'll be performing in my area in March. My wife refuses to go............I might just go by myself. It's a small theater and the tickets are very reasonable.

My wife enjoys his voice but doesn't get the clown suit. She did say she would buy me tickets and go with me if he shows up near Indy.

If anyone would troll the youtubes for a live performance, you'll see the audience is all laughing and enjoying the show. The "We Don't Need Another Hero" w/Keviin Kostner montage is hilarious.
