« on: January 23, 2018, 09:55:05 am »
Hi guys, I'm currently trying to sell me bike via craigslist and on here.

I have a out of state buyer interested in the bike who is in Baltimore. I talked to the guy on the phone and even face timed him. I'm still concerned about getting ripped off.

has anyone accepted money through PayPal and still got ripped off in the end?

appreciate yalls time.

If you are the seller, make sure there is no hold on money before delivery or pick up. I am very leery about Craigslist, sold the church van and had a lot of scammers wanting to give certified checks, etc. PayPal is pretty safe. My sister bought a car off of CL and she got scammed, they had her buy eBay gift cards and send them the redemption codes... and told her it was guaranteed through eBay. She lost $1900... But, You are the Seller, so if they give the money through PayPal, and there isn't a hold on the cash, then you could have them pick it up or have them ship it.

thanks yamahawk. The guy said he would pay for shipping.

Just curious if any paypal deals have fell through in the end.

Couldn't imagine losing my bike to a scammer. We live in such a s***y world that it prevents my trust in strangers. Guy seems honest but you just never know.

thanks again

I’ve done deals with buyers over a distance.  I typically do PayPal for deposit and remainder via wire transfer.  The bike won’t ship until money clears.  Then I also overnight the title to them after money cleara

It all pretty much boils down to trust. I recently sold a bike and the fellow paid me via Paypal and sent the money as a 'gift' so there was not any commission for me to pay.  He is a world famous Kawasaki dealer/collector so I had no worries and fully trusted him.  If you don't feel the trust have you asked him for another form of payment yet ?
On a side note I also just recently met with his shipper who picked the bike up. I would trust him if this person uses him. He hauls bikes for customers east of the Mississippi and up and down the seaboard.  Have some cards if anybody may want to contact him for a quote etc..

If sent as a gift..zero protection.
I was one letter off on an email, the wrong guy cashed In my payment soon after arrival.
It was only because he was honorable he paid me back but it took weeks.

The issue with PayPal is that their return terms are very generous to the buyer. If he receives the bike and has any complaint at all PayPal will refund him and hit your account with little recourse.

They also typically won't release the money to you until they confirm receipt of the product.

A direct bank-to-bank wire is best in my opinion. However, even if he seems on the up-and-up I would be hesitant to provide the information he would need to transfer the funds to you. I would recommend that he arrange for you to call a banker at his bank that you can provide the info too. That person can then set up the wire and your account info doesn't go to the buyer. Make sure that you call the banker rather than them calling you, and that you know the name of the bank and the branch where they are located so that you can confirm you are calling an actual bank.

In the end there is no way of avoiding all risk, but you can reduce it to a livable level.

This is not the case if money is sent as a “Gift”. Gifts also provide no protection for the Buyer. So it’s a “done deal” financially as soon as he hits send.

Paypal is safe as long as you you dont use the "gift" option.  But tell him he needs to pay the 3% fee.

Wire transfer bank to bank is prolly safest.

I've also done Moneygram through Walmart when I bought a bike.

Did you sell the 400F?

I almost got screwed buying carbs and I sent the money as a gift to avoid the fee. PayPal still worked with me and I got all my money back and returned the carbs.

I would call PayPal or email them (not sure they have a number) and see what they say and find out exactly what the buyer can do to screw you. They do have either 30 or 60 days to file a claim if they want their money back, but they have to send the item back to you. It's like the buyer needs to give a case as to why he wants a refund. Like the item was damaged or not what was advertised. But yes, they do tend to side with the buyer in my experience.

Anyone you can trust on this forum to get the cash and then PayPal you as a gift?

Both travel half way, meet at a road cafe, restaurant and you change bike to the pile of money?
We can send/receive money to each other here with a telephone app called Swish and id verification with BankID. Easy to do when the deal is decided and it's free of charge to use.
You'll see when the money is sent from the others phone and you'll hear second later when it reach your bank and phone. Check your account with Bank app on telephone and OK.

I am heading up that way Thursday, and could meet your buyer somewhere closer to the VA/MD line. Maybe have him do a 50/50 (cash/PayPal) transaction. There's also another member that used to be very active here, Tyler, who's up closer to him. Maybe we can find you an intermediary. Let me know if I can help- Stev-O will vouch for me as being trustworthy (I hope).  8)

I asked my bank that question and they said a bank transfer is the safest from the seller's point of view. Once your bank says the money's there, it's there.

Might try eBay... sold a nice 1982 Yamaha XZ550 Vision there with a full 1983 fairing for a pretty good price. Matter of fact, that was the 2nd one... and eBay Does offer seller protection. Just a thought...
