Got some $20 Chinese handlebar switches, which are surprisingly robust. I’ve tested the continuity on all the circuits, and made a few small modifications, and I’m relatively pleased with the results.

I only had to remove one extra switch (headlight power switch) and some bonus wires that were for clutch and brake switches. Surprisingly (or maybe not so surprisingly) the wire colors matched up almost exactly to stock. I only had to change one wire.

The right pod has a cavity for a throttle tube, but it’s a single-cable setup, but I came prepared! I have also purchased a standalone push pull throttle. I’m going to see about removing some of the material from that right side so the throttle hardware can kind of be embedded there.

You may be wondering, why not use stock switches? Well mine were damaged and only about 60% functional, plus I also like the look of the more modern controls.

Sanding and steel brushing the frame back down. The weather has been very rainy here lately, and I made an impatient mistake by putting a coat of semigloss black on the frame while it was apparently damp from the humidity.

I was already thinking about starting over with the frame, since I did such a sloppy job with the metal prep the first time, so it’s not a total disaster. You know, aside from the wasted paint and primer.

I’m also working on a new electrical components plate to accommodate my regulator rectifier, and the smaller plugs and flasher and whatnot.

Lastly, I think I’ve more or less settled on a color for the tins, as demonstrated on this lovely 750 featured on bike exif:

Hopefully you'll run a longer exhaust and not rob your bike of needed back pressure  :o That is a sharp color!

Absolutely gonna run some more normal exhaust. Ideally a 4-into-2 with a couple of supertrapps. I love a quiet bike

Got some “aircraft remover” from rustoleum, and set to work removing the aircraft from my frame. In the absence of sandblasting, this seems to be the most effective method for paint removal. The weather was very nice today, and I’m feeling much better about this whole frame repainting business now.

Happy Valentimes!

Thanks for the build thread Scramps, you're really attacking this project.  Picked up a 71CB500 a few weeks ago myself and looking forward to your progress.

Awesome! Thanks for checking it out. Let me know if you need any help with your build, I’ve learned a lot about these bikes in the past couple of months. There are a ton of super helpful people on these forums as well.

Love the thread already, Scramp!  I’m sorry for giving mine almost exactly yve same title- was unintentional. Here’s to learning, having fun and indulging our obsessions.

No problemo, it is what it is! I imagine that if you went back through the archives on here you’d find dozens of threads with the same title

Finally got to lay hands on my project after a few 12-16 hour workdays interrupted me. The frame is still far from cleaned off, and the sections that I have stripped are already starting to surface rust a little.

The old paint is proving to be very clingy, and is only yielding in small increments. My current method of paint removal is to coat a section with paint stripper, allow it to bubble up for 15-20 minutes, then brush away with wire brushes manually, or wire wheels on the drill.

This process could easily be defined as slow, tedious, and not very much fun. But! I have to get the frame right before I can really move on to the rest of the build.

I’m going to continue to seek sandblasting services/rental, which in truth I haven’t searched super hard for.

A home sandblasting set-up Ivan be had for just a couple hundred dollars, then you can sandblast in the future all you desire.

I’ve found a pretty reputable powder coating business that’s about 25 minutes from my house that says they can blast and powder my frame for about $150. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna go that route.

Only caveat is that the gentleman that I spoke to estimated a 2-3 week turnaround time, as they stay very busy (probably with mining equipment)

Thats a good deal, do it.   If you want the stock look, ask for semi-gloss black...

Work was a little slow today, so I ducked out early and ran the frame over to that powder coating shop.

I was mistaken, they don’t do a lot of mining equipment, it’s airport vehicles. They had probably a dozen luggage trucks over there when I went. They also apparently paint a lot of transformers.

Anyway, the best news was that the gentleman that I talked to told me that he’d probably have my frame ready next week, instead of 2-3 weeks from now, which is cool by me.

I’m gonna take advantage of the absolutely beautiful weather that we have today and see about doing some pre-spring cleaning in the garage

Haven’t been able to spend a lot of time with my Honda for the past week or so, it’s been a little hectic with the jobs.

I did, however, take my old crummy 4-into-1 exhaust to a fabricator friend today, along with the head from the 550 to see if he could maybe make it work.

Also a programming note- my wife and I are going to Orlando for a week and a half or so, for some long overdue vacation.

Hope everyone has a wonderful time and I’ll get back into it in March!

I got a call from the powder coaters saying that my frame was ready, and I’m hoping to go pick it up after work Monday, weather permitting.

Glad to be home and I’m very much looking forward to diving back into this project!

Is your engine ready to go back in?   The lay-the-frame-over-the-motor method is the easiest way.

Engine isn’t quite ready, I’m gonna clean on it some more and then paint it before it goes back in. It’s mechanically ready, though.

Definitely gonna use the laying the frame around the engine method, it’s the best way for sure.

As for the powder coating - I haven’t gotten the final invoice yet, but it sounded like everything went well. I expect that it’ll be close to the original quote of $150.

I’m excited to see it, too! Not sure if it’s gonna happen today, though. That winter storm blew in last night and is making a mess of things.

Not a great picture, and there are a few minor flaws in it that I’ve found so far, but overall, looks pretty nice!

Best news, they only charged me $75!

Are the blemishes in places where they'll be obvious?

The things that I’ve found aren’t really going to be visible once it’s assembled, so it’s not a huge problem.

And yes, it’s a crazy good deal.

Started putting some things back onto the frame tonight. Got my new tapered steering head bearings installed.

Really should have taken the old races out before the powder coating, that lower race was an absolute bear.

Did a little cleanup and started contemplating my next move.

Also having some second thoughts about my cheap Chinese handlebar switches. Any good suggestions for affordable aftermarket options?

So things have been a little abnormal lately. Nothing life-altering, just hectic.

You know how sometimes you try to have some “me-time” and it ends up being circumvented and by the time you get back to what you wanted to do, you’re exhausted and just want to go to sleep?

That’s been every day for the past few weeks.

I finally had an opportunity to do a little something with the bike- I rebuilt my master cylinder.

I’m at a point where I need to make some decisions for final assembly. I want to redo my wiring in such a way that is more aesthetically pleasing, but I feel like that should wait until the bike is more together.

I’m debating scrapping my engine painting idea, since it doesn’t look bad, and I think it will be fine the way it is.

I need to get some supplies together, like braided nylon wire loom and some parts to secure the seat. I’m probably going to have to improvise something for that, since the original hinge was removed.

I’m trying to go too many directions at once, I just need to pick one and start there.
