Got my DIY carburetor synchronizer put together, hooked it up and did a little test start. 1 and 2 were peaking at about 25 centimeters of mercury right off the bat, which was encouraging. 3 was hovering around 18 cm Hg, and 4 was down at like 6-8. I did a little tweaking on 3 and 4 and now they're all pulling very close to the same vacuum. I don't know if it's just my imagination, but it seems like it's running a little more smoothly now.

It does tend to want to die once it warms up, though, which is how this video ends.

Gettin' closer!

Edit: wrong units of measurement, whoops

Made myself some valve adjustment tools that should make the job a little easier. It was a real struggle to get the feelers into position the first time I set them, and I’m not entirely convinced that I did a 100% good job.

Gonna go through the whole tuning procedure from the manual once more and see what I end up with.

Sweet lord, carburetor jets are expensive!!

I must be looking in all the wrong places, because $70 plus shipping seems an awful lot to pay for a set of slow and main jets.

Anybody know of a reliable affordable source for jets?

Finally got my seat back today, and my wife wanted to take a picture of me putting it onto the bike to commemorate the occasion.

They didn’t do what I asked them to do, with the diamond pleating, but I’m just glad to have a seat at this point.

Also still scratching my head over these jets.  If anyone knows a good supplier, that’d be rad.

I got mine from DCC and I think they were like $4 each.

You didn’t say where you looked, but here’s where you should order from:
https://jetsrus.com

I had looked at jetsrus, eBay, Dennis Kirk, and a few other sites that I can’t remember. The pilot jets on jetsrus were $11/each, which I thought was a little steep, but that was also the only place that I could find with the sizes plainly listed.

Going by the jetting guide from the tech forums, I figure that I’m going to need +4 sizes for the slow jet (pod filters, 4-into-1 exhaust) and +1 size for my main jet (bump up one size for every 3 slow jet increases) which from my research would leave me with #120 slow jets and #42 main jets.

Correct me if I’m wrong, of course

Thank you Cal, I thought that it seemed like a drastic increase. I'm very much still learning when it comes to carburetors

If I want this bike to look, sound, and ride well, I’m going to have to re-evaluate several items. I definitely need new exhaust. The pod filters I’m using now are placeholders, I’d MUCH prefer to have a stock air box. K&N pods would be nice too. Beyond that, though, I’m pretty happy with how it’s shaking out so far

Do you need a stock air box?  I’ll be selling mine in the next couple days.

I pulled my carbs apart again today. Moved those needle clips down to the center slot and pulled the main jets in preparation for the 105s that I ordered.

This also gave me a chance to replace the chunky rubber fuel lines with OEM Honda stuff, and double check the cleanliness of everything.

I also installed my seat hinge, pulled the tank to prep it for round 3 (4?) of repainting. I also scratched up my side covers really bad and am going to have to use body filler to resurface them at this point, which sucks.

I’m going to go with a more orangey yellow, this yellow is too bright.

The bike was gold originally, I’ve determined. So that’s fun.

My 71 was originallythe good color, too, as evidenced by the overspray on the underside of the tank.

I should have known that those cheap switches were going to be trouble. They already messed me up on the mixed up wires on the kill switch and starter button, now the lighting is all screwed up.

First my lights weren’t coming on with the switch, I fixed that, but now my right turn signal doesn’t work. It did work before I made the alterations for the head and tail lights, but not after, so I’m guessing that some wires got squished together during reassembly.

Either way, I’m on the hunt for some better switches now. It’d be nice to find some used ones from a salvage place, anything from a Honda bike of any model year would be better than what I’ve got now

Got my jets, put everything back together, too rich. Back to the drawing board!

Where are you needles and screws set? Are you DEAD CERTAIN your emulsion tubes are fully clean and clear? Fresh plugs please before the next test... Warm engine. Fresh plugs, no choke, no throttle blips. Run 3 minutes with a box fan in front. Kill it and pull the plugs. Post a picture with them in sequence.

Needles in the center position, started with screws at 1 3/8 out, then adjusted out 1/4 turn at a time each time it wouldn’t fire, not sure where they ended up. I am not dead certain about the emulsion tubes, I will pull them this evening and verify cleanliness.

I will buy some more plugs and do that test and we shall see how the old girl fares!

Whoosh!

Do what cal says. You need to be very systematic. A combustion engine is a fairly simple machine... it’s the little things you overlook and assumptions you may not even realize you’re making that complicate it. Get basic!

I appreciate the instructions, absolutely!

I was farting around in the garage last night getting all hot and sweaty and frustrated. Reading the technical documentation and the information just stopped being absorbed at a certain point.

I’ll have a fresh go at it and get it figured out. Thanks!

That’s actually what I was working on while i was pulling those out. Air screws, slow jets, emulsion tubes, all that Jazz. Blew them out with the air compressor, poked the goop out of the tiny holes, etc.

Didn’t get those new plugs yet, so the other part of this process will have to wait.

Got the bike back on its own two feet and rolled it outside so it could see the sun for the first time since December. Also so I could clean up the work area a little bit.
