Airbox rubbers???

I put brand new velocity stacks in the airbox and the bottom part of the bells are flat against the bottom dividing surface of the upper half of the airbox. There is a shelf there where the air filters upper seals against. Is this right? I would think that they should protrude into the airbox and still retain their shape.

Have you twisted them in the airbox to the correct orientation? If you look at one closely, you will see that the grooves that snap into the holes in the upper half of the air box are somewhat askew. This takes into account that carbs 2 and 3 are not straight out at 90 degrees to the motor.

Yes. They do the same thing no matter which way I turn them. For my bike, I have to position the "wider" part of the gap up top to aim the airbox towards the mounting holes in the frame so that they aren't binding and trying to pull out. In the pics you can see that the bells are obstructed by the shelf inside the box causing the bottom of the bell to deform.

Now that you mention, I do recall that when taking apart an air box from a 1972 K2, many years ago, the velocity stacks had turned very hard and were difficult to pull out of the upper half. When I got them out, they had flat spots.

i've always found the airbox rubbers to be an imperfect design. i'm sure there are many here who have gotten them perfect but i haven't. if the rubber was a bit more firm but still flexible i think it would work better. mine actually have slight gaps on the outside of the 4 airbox holes. so my issue is the opposite of yours.
DV750 do you have your airbox rubbers backwards? the horn side should be on the airbox (Fixed). i did this when i converted from the PO's crappy pods. and sort of got the same effect you have.
Edit: I meant to say horn/bell side to airbox. The other way which is how I mistakenly installed them the 1st time after replacing pods. Thanks Beemer.

Beemer thanks for pointing that out. THAT is actually how I did it wrong the first time as I explained above. My mistake. I meant to say horn side to airbox. Jeeze, no wonder I fuked it up the first time.
