JIS recommendations
« on: January 29, 2018, 03:41:41 PM »
i'd like to buy a set of JIS screw drivers and driver bits (1/4").  any recommendations and what the sizes used on the sohc bikes are?  do they size them like phillips? 1, 2 ,3 and what not.

also, more specifically what size for the trans case cover as i have to replace the gasket there.

I am looking also, here is a set on eBay that has a ball driver grip. And it does seem like they size them the same.

Get the Vessel, trust me.  I dont like the ones with interchangeable bits.
This one can also be used like an impact...

And here's the #3...

I dont think the #1 is necessary.

+1 on the Vessel Impactas. They are THE BEST. The Vessel interchangeable tip impact drivers are also THE BEST.

That's cool! An impact driver and screwdriver in one! I lost my #2 phillips impact bit that I have used forever, so I am in the need of a new impact set. This might be a good compromise.

I bought this set and really like it.  You can use the bits in a cordless impact driver so if you need some hammer action to pop out a stubborn screw, works great.

In a perfect world, I would have both lol... I like the idea of being able to pound on the screwdriver, have done that ALOT on Harbor Freight free ones.. they don't last long, but hey... they're free! I may get one of the vessel set in #2, as that is what most all I use on the bikes, and then get the other set for routine use.

The Vessel Impacta did not replace my standard impact driver.  I use the Impacta for "light duty" use, not removing 40 year old corroded engine cover screws.

I have found that the Motion-Pro T handle that comes with very good JIS bits (1,2 and 3) works better than banging away with an impact Driver. If the screw head is in anywhere like original condition, the torque you can apply with the T handle tool will break open any corroded screw. If the screw head is FUBAR, then the impact driver will be necessary. BTW, the Vessel #3 JIS isn't all that hot as an impact driver. Works superbly as a screwdriver

I have the Vessel set and they are top quality. The impact doesn't replace a true impact driver it just has a tang and direct stem thru the handle.

Like they all said, go with the Vessel drivers I got a 1, 2, and a 3 Impacta. The Impacta would not free my stuck case screws though, you will need a real impact driver for that. I love the screwdrivers, they also work great on non JIS screws.

that's what i'm looking for.  bits for a lower power impact driver i have.  1/4" drive.  i believe it's strong enough to free a stuck case screw but not strong enough to run an 1/2" x 6" lag screw into a hardwood all the way.

If you are talking about JIS for a small 1/4" Battery Impact I think we are talking about different things. A 1/4" battery impact is good for alot of things but a manual impact driver is what you want for Phillips type case screws. Even the best JIS bits on a Battery Impact Driver will not work anywhere near as well for removing Phillips Case Screws as a manual impact just because of the fact that you are hammering the bit into the srew head. For bolts, nuts, and Allens the Battery 1/4 works well.

You want a manual impact driver, the kind you hit with a hammer to loosen Phillips Type Case Scews. The 1/4" Battery impact driver you are talking about is something completley different and is not as good a choice for loosening 40 year old Phillips Case  screws. It is a great tool to use once the screw is loosened to spin it out and is very good for use on Crankcase bolts but for old frozen Phillips screws you want to wack them with a hammer type impact as your best bet to not screw them up. Your first shot at old Phillips Case Scews is your best shot and you don't want to take any chances stripping them out. The Vessell Hammer Type Impact JIS in some of the ads in this thread works well.
