I do still have the petcock on, and I'm running fluid through it to make sure it's flowing good.  One question, as I do not see the mounting scres to the tank, do I need to pull that fuel bowl off the petcock and then find a screw under there for removal?  When it comes time to do the tank sealer, I will need that petcock off.

Also, is there a crossover on this tank?  I've heard some folks mentioning that they don't want to clog this during sealer appplication,k i'm not sure if this tank has one or what that even is?  It looks to be a wide open tank from what I can see.

CB350F tanks do not have crossovers. To see the two mounting screws, yes, you need to pull the bowl off of the petcock. When I line 350F tanks with POR-15, I get use a rubber stopper (cork) from Ace Hardware for the cap hole, and tape off the flow hole for the petcock. I insert two screws in the mounting holes just enough to make sure the POR-15 doesn't clog the threads -- you can take them out after a day or so, long after you've stopped sloshing the stuff around and it's already set, but it's still gummy enough to get the screws out. I also tape off the top of the tank to preserve the paint. you don't want the rust remover, metal etch, or liner to get on the tank. I also don't use POR-15 for the cap, just remove the rust that's on there. POR-15 can clog the vent (and while you're at it, you should make sure it's not clogged already). And you can buy replacement gaskets for the cap for a few bucks if yours is cracked or brittle.

And I overlooked it and am surprised nobody else has asked: How are those pipes?

Update:  My tank is bad!  After a couple days of vinegar, and some of the degreaser that came in the por kit, I'm still looking at big old peeling chunks of either old fuel or possible a sealant that was used?  I went with chemical warfare and have 1 gallon of muriatic acid soaking in there right now.  I will let it sit for the day and then dump tonight.  I've put a chain inside the tank to help break up some of this nasty stuff.  I'm not sure I will ever get it out.  AFter the acid I may go back to a couple gallons of vinegar and let it sit for even longer, like a week if neeed be.  I thought I had it clean but after looking real deep into the tank I can see on the lower parts and in some of the nooks where there is a good amount of peeling crud.

I also took a good look at the pipes, looks like i may have a leak somewhere down at the muffler where the top pipe is blowing on the bottom pipe.  Only reason I think this is because I can see black build up there from where it's run in the past.  I will wait to get it running to mess with the pipes and if t's not major I will probably leave it.  THe headers are solid as are the pipes.

If you suspect a failed prior sealer, such as Kreem, acetone will get it out. Although you've already got a POR-15 kit, Red Kote is another sealer that can be diluted with acetone, and it's a quicker and easier process than POR-15. I'd be wary of letting your tank sit in acid for a week.

The 350F exhaust was pretty flimsy from the factory, and usually failed where the head pipes meet the mufflers as well as the underside of the mufflers.

I've got the vinegar back in.  The muriatic took a lot of the stuff out but i'm still left with some good size chunks of flakes in there.  I'm going to shake around the vinegar for a few days in there and let it do some work.  I don't see any issues with letting it sit for a few days, but man this tank is a bear, may need some hardcore chemical warfare.

Acetone can be used as a test for water-based (latex) paints as it doesn't affect oil-based, so do a small test wipe preferably on the underside to see for yourself if you can use it. ;)

Yes, but I imagine muriatic acid would too.

I've both masked off a tank to clean it out and not masked it off. I guess I prefer the latter because you can see what you are doing and not trust the masking. I've taken masking off in the past and been disappointed that something found its way underneath it.

I am the same way, if i dripple a bit of muriatic, i just wipe it off, no ill effects yet.  It loosened some stuff up but still hae some massive flakes like 5" in diameter.  Will continue to use vinegar and chain to get this stuff out.  I'm planning to take it to the car wash tonight and attempt to power wash as much out as I can.

I hope you are dealing with the underside of the top of the tank equally. It is frequently overlooked.

What a mess.  So any ideas on what chemical to try next?  Finally after a week of crazy vinegar and muriatic acid attempts I am still left with a filthy tank.  Last night I was able to get some huge pieces of crap out, I am not even sure what it is, but I'm finally starting to see the inside of the tank.  I could keep going with vinegar, maybe give it like 10 days this time in hopes it will finally eat through, what do you guys think?  I've still got tons of flappy varnish crud.  the rust really is not the issue it's this stuck on varnish and possible old sealer, i really can not confirm.  Here is a photo of what i was able to careful pull out of the tank.  Still much more in there.

That is an old Kreem liner. Fill it with E85 to the top and let it soak.

For what it's worth, I recently cleaned out a 400F tank that sat for about 5 years with some gas in it. Opening that tank up almost knocked me out! I didn't faint, but it did give me a headache for a day and the foul odor lingered in the garage for a few days. I had heard about how bad old stale gas was, but I never expected it to be this bad. Anyway...

I too first used vinegar, which did a rather goo job of getting out the rust. However, the bottom of the tank showed some tar-like residue, along the seams it was most evident. I put in some ball bearing to help break it up, along with some vinegar, but it didn't seem to help much. I also tried ethanol, which seemed to just soften that gunk up, and then the bearings actually just sank into that molasses-like mess. Not giving up, I finally got some acetone and let it sit in there for a couple days (not filled, just to about an inch above the molasses). This did the trick. All that crud was finally dissolved and I was able to clean it out. Did two rounds of acetone, flushed well with water, then did another round of vinegar. It's now looking rather good. Note that this tank was not previously lined, so I don't know how acetone might work for you but I wanted to at least relay my experience in case it helps.

E85 will do the trick you guys say?  Just looking for the next step to get this done!  thanks in advance, would denatured alcohol be better or what do you think?  I can get some acetone by the gallon as well.

In my case, the ethanol didn't seem to do too much to that gooey mess at the bottom of the tank and seams. The acetone worked much, much better. I did use ethanol after the final vinegar treatment, then dried it all out with a hair drier, and finally added some gas with oil and StarTron. The tank is now sitting on the shelf, waiting to be put back on the bike once I finish my engine rebuild.

Jus' sayin'.
And acetone will damage paint. Just saying. If you want to destroy a Kreem liner, you can simply use ethanol which won’t damage paint with the same voracity as acetone.

What I find humorous is, the tank was lined. So how then was there rust? I strongly suspect theIP mistook his liner for rust and created his new problem of trying to removed a damaged liner by using acid, not rust converter at the onset. The latter would have done nothing to the liner.

There is no new problem lol this is ongoing.  Fairly simple but always open to suggestion.

1.  Tank has been lined in the past....like 20 years ago. 
2. Tank was full of varnish
3.  Tank also had rust.

I am making progress but now need to attack the liner.  Theres no way that kreem was staying in there under my watch it was in terrible shape.  Flakes peels and varnish from day one.  It also leaked at the seam.  Hoping to do it all fresh buddy.  Just saying.

What is the process and legnth of time for acetone soak.

No easy answer. I've removed a kreem liner in about a day and a half with acetone, and swishing a small length of chain. Best to just keep an eye on it and be careful. Again --  you can buy rubber plugs at Aceh hardware for the cap and petcock holes. When you've got it clean, the POR-15 -- if done right -- will seal it up well.

Nothing inconsistent about a failed liner and finding rust. The liner fails, and rust can start, or likely restart as rust was likely the cause for someone to line it in the first place. Or they did a poor job of lining it.

I'm on my 2nd gallon of acetone.  I've tested some small samples of what looks like the liner that i posted in the photo.  After soaking all night in a small cup of acetone with a sample piece, it is not disolved.  I know the kreem liners will actually disolve so I am not wondering what the heck this stuff is.  I'm going after it with acetone, but not getting the results I've seen with old liners.  I'll just keep it going and keep agitating and moving it around for a few more days.  This tank is going to be the death of me.  THe worst part is, i've got the bike ready to go, just have to get my tank cleaned out.

I used M.E.K. on my 74 350f when my Red Kote liner failed. Previous owner applied the tank liner directly over surface rust. M.E.K. melted that particular liner in minutes, but it took a little time to get all of the red liquid removed.

Take extreme care with this stuff. I applied a super thick coat of paste wax on the exterior of the tank with a garden hose handy.

Well i got majority of the old liner crud out.  Still looking real shabby in there though.  I'm now soaking with full stregnth commercial degreaser, I'll let that sit for about a week, take the power washer to it, then i'm calling it good.  I am going to plan to run a fuel filter for at least the first tank or two, regardless of how clean the inside of the tank looks I cannot see the whole thing so no garuntee that it's completely all gone.  Rather than shove crud into my carbs i'll be running a clear inline filter to see if I'm catching anything.
