CB550 Lithium Battery
« on: February 02, 2018, 05:14:44 AM »
I've painted myself into a corner. My battery box i've built under my seat isn't big enough to get a cheap and reliable AGM battery so I'm looking for a Lithium. I've read some good things on other forums about SSB.

I'm just looking for any advice regarding the specs of this battery:
http://www.ssbpowersport.com.au/Products/ProductList/tabid/241/mode/details/pid/616/Default.aspx

I know the Stock battery has 180CCA and 12Ah. This Lithium has 190CCA. I have converted all incandescent bulbs to LED with the exception of the headlight (H4 - 60W). I am also running a Ricks reg/rectifier. I will keep the kick starter but also use the electric start from time to time.

Do you think I would have any problems?

Rick's now has a r/r that has a lower charging cut off to use with lithium ion.  I don't see a problem as long as it's dialed it and pops off fast.  But you always have kicker to fall back on.  I run a 120cca battery on my rc51 and does the job like a champ.  The stock one was about 180.

Personally I love speedcell batteries.  The quick disconnect is great and the cells are wrapped in a fire retardant material should things go bad

I only have the standard Ricks reg/rec. What do you mean by dialed in and pops off fast?

Lithium batteries don't like being over or undercharged and can catch fire. Ask Boeing what happens when you can't figure out 'what went wrong'
When a company with billions in backing take a year or two to figure things out it kindea makes me want to stick with AGM  ;D

As in timing and carbs are adjusted correctly and bike fires like it should.

Uh . . . no, I don't think he was referring to engine timing or carbs.  I think he meant that a voltage regulator for a lithium battery needs to be very responsive to the special needs of lithium batteries.  A lithium battery does NOT like to be overcharged . . . period DOT!!  Yea, I work for Boeing and believe me, that 787 lithium battery problem was embarassing and Samsung should have paid a little better attention with their cell phones.

I will stick to other battery technology for a while.  No lithium batteries for me and all you need to do is run a Google search to graphically see why.

The ballistic ion and the anti-gravity batteries are somewhat different . Ricks mentions just the ballistic and not the anti gravity . It has to do with the discharge rate upon cranking , especially when its cold out. ( see you tube ) . We just finished a 78 750k  with the original Ricks solid state  rec/reg and a anti gravity and it works great. The problems with the ion is if it is being overcharged ( 14.8 ) or discharged ( 11.8 i believe ) the battery is junk, thats why you cannot use the original regulator . I'm sticking with a 12 cell anti gravity on my current build on a 76 750 SS . i have a digital voltmeter on the bikes to monitor charging. Also you need the dedicated charger for the ion battery. I looked into the ballistic but i am sticking with antigravity . I believe it is worth the $$.
