Restore or not?
« on: February 04, 2018, 08:33:49 AM »
The bike in my avatar is the bike I am talking about. I bought this bike new in Japan when I was in the Navy in 1970 put it on my ship and brought it back to the states, it is a JDM bike. I want to put this bike back the original gold color and wondering if I should go all the way ( by this I mean taking it apart and pant or power coat the frame and other black parts) or just have the tank and other parts that would be painted the same color painted.

Paint and pipes and a re-pop airbox and a really detailed cleaning would bring it back to a lot of its glory and still not be afraid to take it out on the road. Is it running and roadworthy right now ?  Might be different if you were shooting for the show circuit or looking to sell for absolute top dollar.

Great looking bike! I zoomed in on the pics and the frame paint looks fine to me. If you want to get it back to original I would just do the tins. I usually do the small black parts myself like side & center stands, foot pegs, etc. How close to original are you looking? Do you mean you are thinking OEM exhaust, air box, seat, rear rim, etc? You can't go wrong with the gold my friend :)

That bike is awesome. Always fancied a JDM 750. Worth considering the Yamiya 750 body sets, and rear shocks (or z1parts have the shocks). That rear hub brake plate looks unusual??

Agreed James...I think he changed out that rear hub. Never saw one with the lines on the right side. James why not post up a pic of your gold KO for him. She is a looker!

Definitely restore. Even if its not a 98 point restoration, these bikes are some of the prettiest ever made and will grow in value.

JamesH that rear brake hub and wheel is from a 81 750K I had on for a short time, I have the original back on now. I did not notice that myself in the picture. I have been thinking of the Yamiya body sets and even exhaust, If I do that just those would cost three or more times than what I payed  for it new but I would be ok with that. James that is what I would like but I will be riding this bike so it will not be a show bike but I want it very nice. My wife says that I would sell her before I would sell the bike.

You will not need a complete restore to make that bike look as good as James. Is the chrome good?

Johnie the chrome is still good. James I have 63000 km on it. It sat in my basement for several years while having family stuff going on.

I like it the  way it is.. historic sort of.
Just slowly pic up the replacement parts as you can.
Then one season do the switch.. but you may not like it more.

Oh heck yeah that's worth repainting.
With that bike any money you spend on it will increase the value exponentially.

Well, it's only original once.

But, if you have a source for frame labels if you repaint...

How early is that K0? It's awesome you have held on to it all these years. If that tank is a wrinkle tank I'd pay to paint the original parts. I just did.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

I just want to thank everyone for the replies. TwoTired it is funny you should mention the frame labels, this bike dose not have any frame labels not even the build date one on the steering head. Don, not a wrinkle tank I wish it was.

My wife says that I would sell her before I would sell the bike.
Got an asking price for the wife? Maybe you could raise enough to pay for the new pipes  ;)

I hope you can make it to one of our Reunions, we had one in Colorado in  August.
Terry Brandth rode his 70 out from west coast of WA state. Serial #20,×××. Had it since new, and he is almost same age as you.. be nice to see it.  We have one at Bonneville this year, maybe more.
Damn I just checked 1800 miles ..takes 4 days to get There. .

We did Colorado  last year, not sure yet where we will meet yet, but Bonneville  sounded like a good choice.
We met up in Doloroes Colorado,  first reunion ever, it was great fun. There was page's and pages on it, wil, find it and bump it back up.
I think in the open section. Ofreen rode his 160, 000 mile 75 F model.
