Too much oil
« on: February 11, 2018, 06:41:44 PM »
Wondering how I can tell if I have too much oil in the motor. 71 cb750 k1.

Custom oil tank so no dipstick but smokes after it sits for a bit. Once you run her no oil burned, seemed to run good and holds 60psi pressure no problem

when you change the oil you should only be putting in the recommended amount (someone else can chime in and advise how much that is and then a couple of dozen others can join in to ' discuss' the type and brand to use...)
i blame Terry

How much bigger is the oil tank? I have a custom one on my race bike that is a bit bigger and with the oil cooler I run about an extra quart in mine. Just don't want the tank too full, but it probably doesn't matter how much the whole system has in it.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Overfilling would basically mean overflowing out the tank.

A custom oil tank could be larger or smaller than stock. A larger oil capacity will provide more opportunity for the oil to cool whilst in the tank, before being drawn back into the engine. Conversely a smaller capacity tank will give little opportunity for the oil to cool in the oil tank. The smoking condition may be caused by your engine & oil being hotter than it should be.

K1's don't have the same valve seals as later models in the heads and can be known to smoke a little.

Only about 12 oz more than stock. Have an oil cooler as well. Not overflowing. Seems to run pretty much ok. Only smokes when it’s cold, so I’m thinking I’m ok. Just wasn’t sure if too much oil was really possible and if so would it cause pain to the motor

CB750 takes around 3.5 L when totally dry. An oil change with filter, need around 2.4 L oil, not more.
