carb rebuild kit
« on: June 03, 2005, 10:53:23 AM »
hi,

I'm installing a carb rebuild kit on a 500 K1, and I have a small silver barrel that looks like a jet for the main needle. the thing is though, that the opening that the big needle goes into currently on the carbs, is much smaller and simply doesn't match. my inclination is to install everything else, which matches up fine, and omit the replacement of this jet.

?????????????????????
Are you sure you got the correct kit?

Something sounds very odd.
Sounds like a part for a much later carb from the way I hear your description.

the bags are all tagged for a cb500. they look like they would have been driven in with a wooden dowel or something like that, but the orafice that holds this jet on the carb body is about 2mm smaller in diameter than the replacement.

odds are they packaged cb500 and cb550's together, although I couldn't say for sure, not ever having a 500. Is it truly a jet? or a needle? If a needle, I'd skip it, the old ones clean up good, If it's a jet, well...call or contact the person that sold you the kits. I just bought three kits for my GT380 zooki, all the same part numbers, and all are the same except two mains are 80's and 1 is a 78. Not worth it to argue with the seller, and I need larger mains anyway, so I'm probably going to buy mine here:

hym.
All of my bikes (well the SOHC4's anyway) are '75 and earlier. I have several '72 CB500's waiting to be put back together.
I have seen a part similar to your description one time. It came from a carb set that I was looking at for a friend from a CV type carb off a '79 model. Not an SOHC4, but I believe that the carbs were the same type as the later CV type used on the '77 & '78 models. The ones I saw were from a CM400A Hondamatic (2 cylinder).
That is why I'm wondering if you received an incorrect kit, probably labeled incorrectly.
Do the rest of the parts look like they will fit?

If I'm not mistaken, (I probably am) there was an early 80's bike that was also a CB500. It was a DOHC, had vacuum carbs, was called the CB500T or C or S or something.

well, it appears that I did indeed have the right kit for a cb 500, only these carbs are off a cb 550. I've sent the kits back and will begin again when their replacements arrive.

500 and 550 carbs are identical except for jet sizes so you will get exactly the same again. I think i have seen the bits you mention in kits that are listed for the 360? as well but without ripping my garage to bits and finding the kits i cant be sure. Just use everything except the needles and alloy needle jet.

Hym, is this kit aftermarket or from Honda?  I had a similar problem on my 400, but it ws aftermarket. The guy who is helping me  says we should try a kit from Honda, but these carbs seem so difficult, I'm thinking it might be more efficient to just install Mikunis.
