How do you identify which piston ring goes where?
« on: February 08, 2018, 05:00:21 AM »
Ok so recently rebuilt the top of my CB350f as it was burning oil and humming up the 3rd cylinders sparkplug every 8miles or less -
Valves, valve stem seals, cut seats, skimmed, and vacuum tested, cylinders honed.
And new rings fitted on 2 cylinders.

But after 300 miles I am still smoking at higher revs when pull load.

Onthe rings I got from Honda there were no distinguishable marks to say which side is up I am thing I got one round the wrong way. So maybe it's not scrapping the oil properly back down.

What are your thoughts 💭?

Many Thanks

chrome or shiny edge is usually top ring, gray colored ring goes second, small dot or mark on ring goes up, note very small mark so you might have to look with magnifier glass

not sure but maybe some rings have no marks in which case, ask the manufacturer

sorry not much help but thats all i have

Steve

Well I have the blessing of knowing the chrome colour ring is inthe right place but I couldn't see a mark and didn't think to inspect under magnification so I will pull it and inspect the and worse case flip it anyway for a trial. Thank you

The top ring is usually flat faced, the second ring should have a tapered edge with the taper set to scrape oil down.
