So I was in this bike shop,,
« on: February 08, 2018, 02:51:41 AM »
And there was a motorcycle, I said that's kind of cute what is it? The guy said Sears, I asked the guy is it Italian or Japanese? Thinking Italian. He looked at me like I was speaking latin. He said no, I told you, it's Sears. Jeeez!

And of course he was right. It said Sears right on it. I guess they made it at the Sears factory next to the Lawn Mowers and the DieHard batteries.

They worked on my buddies V twin Kawasaki for a year and a half. It stayed fixed for about a week, ran another 25, maybe 30 miles. Crank sensor. it's a bad mofo to get to.

No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

They were mostly made by PUCH in Austria(?), and some were indeed Italian, around early to mid '50's.

Yes, Puch from Austria. Sold here under "Sears Allstate". Don't know about the Italian versions. HD had a stake in Aermacchi and sold some of their bikes under the HD label here.
Puch had a good market share in Europe. Smaller bikes up to 250cc, mostly. Merged with Steyr to form Steyr Daimler Puch. Made agricultural tractors and heavy duty trucks. Is now part of Magna International and builds some cars for renown manufacturers. You would be surprised.

A lot of guys started out with the Sears 106cc Allstate... and it was a Gilera, I believe. Great demand for them now, from re-lived youth. My drag racing motorcycle buddy has an immaculate black Sears 106, he loves it, as it was the 1st bike he ever rode...

I had an Allstate when I was young, and yes, it was a 50cc Puch made in Austria.
Overall, it was a great moped, it had pedals to start it and had a two speed manual trans. It could be ridden with the motor off, but whats the fun in that?!

Yep, Puch made all the 50cc models, and Vespa made the really early ones in the '50's and early '60's up till about 1965. Gilera made their 106cc and 125cc versions in 1967 and 68. They ran pretty good for their size and that era!

Not sure if Benelli ever made a Sears, although they may have made a Montgomery Wards or JC Penney...

I tried to play stump the bike guy with my brother, a friend had a little old Japanese bike that looked like a tiny bmw in his bar as a decoration. I took him in the back and said OK smart guy what's that? He says oh look, they got a Lilac!
Of curse he owned one when he was in Japan in the early 60's.
He said there were Kawasaki's that looked like Harleys and a lot of clone type bikes like the Lilac. One of his friends went to Germany and could ship home a certain size box. A bike wouldn't fit in it so he sawed a BMW in half and packed it in two boxes to send home. He never found out if it got welded back together. Apparently the Navy guys had better luck bringing bikes back than the air force guys.

Actually, they are both Italian bikes, Gilera merged with Piaggio back in the late '60's. Garelli is an Italian manufacturer also.

But, Garelli didn't make any bikes for Sears, at least to my knowledge.

Yes, Charlie, they are both Italian bikes. I was of the opinion that Sears sold Garellis, not Gileras.

Here's my current '66 Puch [Puke!], is not an Allstate.
Bought it for my daughter from a hipster in Downtown Austin for $400. All original, except seat cover, runs great but the motor is loud, crank bearings going out?
Will not be getting a rebuild for that...

The first Sears were made in America, they used a Spacke motor I think..
They were probably all done before 1920..

i have just endet rebuild a puch
..bo-17 bearings is still avaibel..and all engine parts can be faund re made new..not all in good kvality..but most is fine.
if it rumbels by pulling the clutch..its just the pull bearing in the clutch housing..not a big deal to thange that. you.can get a new one

the crank main bearing need to be chimsed up..so a bearing puller for open bearings (inner ring) is needet for the job..like to have 0,02mm movent in aksial direktion..or a bit less

Your mind sometimes plays these tricks on you....
I clearly remember a large department-/catalog mail order store sold Garellis. Only it wasn't Sears, it was Neckermann, way back when I still lived in Germany!
