Has anyone relined a rear brake drum (400f)?
« on: February 08, 2018, 12:45:53 PM »
As per title. I gather the standard technique to do drums is to machine out the old liner and then find a new car brake drum of approximately the correct size and then turn it to exact size necessary, and press/heat fit it.

This is actually to replace a cracked liner on an aftermarket A.R.E. wheel, they are the same size drum as standard though.   Has anyone done this on a 400f? If so, what car model's brake drum did you use? The 400f's 160mm brake is rather small for cars.

Can you get the liner out of a serviceable stock hub? If you look up Allen Millyard on Facebook, he is the one that makes the extra cylinder motorcycle engines. He is doing a 374cc six right now, and made his own drum hub and made the liners out of car drums. Maybe ask him what drums he used or see if he has some ideas on what you might need.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Good idea- I don't know if the stock ones are removable, but I do have spare stock hubs...

And yes I follow Allen on there, though the hubs he used are much bigger than the 400f ones, I can certainly try him. That six of his is pretty tasty work too.

Almost anything is possible. I have seen someone relining an alloy wheel but it was probaly not cheap. The original drum was cast in and had already been removed, I don't know why (worn out or cracked) or how. When I saw it the drum bore was being cleaned up in a fairly large lathe with its gap removed, the wheel still barely fit. A piece of large cast iron pipe was waiting to be turned down to be a brake drum. The plan was to leave a tight interference fit, heat the wheel and chill the drum, then press it into place before final machining to round. I don't know how it came out, I was at the machine shop for other reasons and asked about it when I saw the wheel mounted in the lathe.

That's 6.299", a piece of 6" ductile iron water main might be the correct size to be turned down. I get 157.8MM ID, 175mm OD. Not sure if that includes the cement liner or not.

probably a trailer drum brake could be found in roughly the right size, but it would still need to be machined and installed - after removing the original one.

Wow, thats a blast from the past... my 1st car was a 1959 Vauxhall Victor Super, had a 100c.i. 4 cylinder, British Americas engine, 3 speed manual, and looked like a 3/4 size 56 Chevy 4 door... Bought it when I was almost 16, it was imported into USA by Pontiac.

How about golf carts, might have something to work with.
