Two bikes recently came up in my area, same relative condition and just about the same asking price, too. $3,800 and $4,000 respectively. I'm just wondering what you'd prefer, if you really wanted a bike and had the money burning a hole in your pocket.

I had a 1981 cb750 and I sold and wanted to get something smaller, a 400f or 550f. But it's hard to pass on a 750 that's so early and in such nice condition. Gotta have those painted fork ears.

If you think you'll be riding two up with frequency, go for the 750.

If you ride mostly solo, the 550 will be more than adequate and more nimble.

I will warn that some 550s prior to mid year 76, can have the dreaded rocker cover wear issue.
Look for F model engine serial numbers #1133172 and subsequent for engines with the factory improved covers. (S/B 500/550 #8)

Hey guys I appreciate all the responses.

I actually owned an 81 cb750 dohc. It was a cafe bike so it probably had 25-50 lbs. shaved off the factory weight. The K1 we are discussing here would be a good 50-60 lbs. heavier as a result. While I loved the power and acceleration of the 750, I felt it was a bit of a hog.

For reference I am pretty tall and slim. I'm 6'2" and about 165 lbs. That's why I really like the idea of a 400 under me. I have ridden a 550 and it was good too.

I think I have to be honest with myself, The 750 K1 we are discussing is attractive to me because I think I could flip it when I got bored. I also love the look, with the gold paint and the K1 tank. However what I really will feel happy on is something smaller.

Here is the 550 that I passed on last month. This bike was assembled from various other bikes. It's nearly the same distance away from me as the bikes we are discussing today. I decided to pass because the owner and builder didn't seem to be able to answer questions very well so it made me weary of buying a bike that he'd built.

A friend of mine warned me about an issue with the 550s, I think it was the same thing but I can't remember because we were talking over the phone. The ad for the 550 says "completely gone thru." I'm waiting on a phone call today to find out more about how and if it has been restored.

All 75 and 76, U.S. import, 550f ‘ s had the brown seat....
1975 seat coat ...77270-390-000
1976    “.        ...77270-390-000
I wish you'd stop saying that.  Only the 76 CB550F models came with a brown seat in the US.

The colors in your posted brochure are 76 colors (paint and seat), printed for the 76 model year in late 75.  It was common practice to introduce the next model year in September of the prior year.  Copyrights can't be future dated.

Here is a page from the Honda Motorcycle Identification Guide published By American Honda Motorcycle company.

Cheers,
Really ? Show me where it says the 75 had a black seat...or brown..in the description ..anyone that knows Honda knows the mistakes that can be made in their own material. There are omissions and mistakes , so it’s up to the individual to get to the facts......
What is it about the word” new” in the description that’s  not understandable ....I’ve never seen a second year bike described as new.....try reading the whole brochure....
The 75 colors were candy Sapphire Blue...and ..sunrise Metalflake orange...
The 76 were sapphire metalflake blue...and shiny orange....so exact descriptions , I said exact, are misleading on both years. But which is “ more”right.
Oh, and I guess I’m making up the part numbers.....
Here’s a big bike, Nov 75, magazine article....you do understand that a magazine for a November publication is usually assembled 3 months in advance. So, in your world, the 1976 F model was available in July/ August of 75 ?.....hmmmm, funny, ....
Don’t tell me what to stop posting. You and yours don’t want to accept facts? Your problem....
Finally, here’s a pic of my all original, unrestored 1975 Honda 550f....with the brown seat...

I’ll be at oley...again...in case you or anyone else wants to “ discuss “ this further....I’m sick and tired of people like you who think you know everything and can’t admit your wrong.....and get on a public forum and hide behind your keyboard with your arrogant bluster....

For the same money I would get the 750, and I'm a 550 guy.

Since there appear to be a few 550ss experts in the thread, anyone know if these stripes were factory or aftermarket? I only occasionally see them.

They are factory.  Just like the one in my avatar.

You've told us that 3 times in this topic alone, seats are made to sit on while riding, and when you do that you can't even see it, so who cares....
