How perfectly the same do these have to be?
« on: February 17, 2018, 11:29:37 AM »
Hello everybody I recently put a new rear tire on my bike and I was curious how perfect do the ticks  need to line up on the adjusters.
I am all about safety and keeping my bike in good condition.
Is my alignment going to go off? And will I ruin my bike?

For my chain to have proper slack it needs to be a hair off the third Mark. Here are pictures of each side

Does look allright.
A very easy way to check if your rear wheel is straight is to put the bike on centrestand with front wheel straight, and than do 1 pushup about 6 feet behind your bike, and look along the rear wheel on both sides.
You'll see right away if things are in line!

Also, the thing to look at besides the marks on the adjusters lining up, is to visually inspect from behind.  The sprocket should be positioned perfectly between the chain links.  Adjust, spin the chain, adjust again as necessary.  Your chain slack should be able to move up and down about an inch or so.

Just measure from the pivot bolt to axle and make both sides the same.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

I line up the marks on each side until I get close enough that the next set of marks is too tight. From that point I begin to turn each adjuster 1/4 turn at a time until I reach the tension I want. Then I'll check sprocket alignment just for kicks, but this method proves pretty true when both adjusters are turned the same number of (1/4) turns past the same reference mark.

i.e. turn one side a 1/4 turn, turn the other side 1/4 turn, check tension, repeat as necessary, then verify sprocket alignment with a straight edge or a string (my method).

Very doubtful those marks are accurate, best thing to do is actually measure (as already mentioned)
I worked at a Honda dealers, we always checked at first service and made a note how far 'out' marks were (some were pretty accurate but tat was exception) Can be as much as one full mark 'off' when checked from swing arm pivot. Production 'tolerances' got a bit stupid when Honda started turning out a complete bike every 7 seconds in late 70's
I fake being smart pretty good

Just measure from the pivot bolt to axle and make both sides the same.

+1 swingarm pivot bolt to axle bolt.

Swing arm pivot is a fixed point. Make the distance from that point to the axle on each side the same and adjust your chain for proper tension.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

Watch from the 1:15 mark on the video. That’s where we’re saying to measure from. Much more accurate than using your eye or the graduations on the adjusters.
