Removing swing arm bolt....
« on: February 15, 2018, 12:57:09 PM »
....rear fork pivot bolt.  Packed her full of grease.  Removed left side nut.  Right side just spinning.  Is it hammer and block of wood time from the left side? (Have not been removed since installation in Japan in 1973.) Swing arm rises and falls freely and is not binding.
Thanks. (You tube and Clymers no help this time.)

Don't pound on the grease fitting!  Either use a section of pipe that will go over the grease fitting or gently wiggle out the grease fitting and then use wood or brass to drive the bolt out.  You might have to get a section of pipe that fits through the hole to get the bolt out.

I would spray copious amounts of penetrating oil on both sides of the bolt, and spin it so you can loosen any rust or gunk that may have accumulated. If you have an air or electric impact, you could spin it by the nut, and press on the grease fitting with a piece of wood to see if that would help start it out.

Bolt now out by using small socket and drive over the grease nipple and just driving it through. Thanks for the help.

Pics now shown of the swing arm center collar after only being wiped down.  I have not cleaned it yet, but does anyone think I have an issue here with possible corrosion? The grease holes are clear and work.

Have not tried to remove the bushings yet.  Including pics of the original parts at end of swing arm with felt washers.  Feels like opening a time capsule.

Thanks.

Looks like it took a hit from rust and lack of lube. Bob
