Mystery plastic inside rear sprocket bearing
« on: February 06, 2020, 09:15:55 PM »
There are weird strips of transparent plastic that were causing my one rear wheel bearing to feel a little rocky. Used tweezers and a flashlight to get about 5 or 6 strips of identical length plastic out. Feels a lot like dental floss. Bearing feels awesome now and has been packed with new grease.. but what could this have been even?

Sounds like some kind of brush bristle.

That's kinda what I thought but they were really flexible like floss. Was wondering if someone would pop in and be like "oh, that's the blah blah sealer from the bearing race, it's dangerous now, etc." Lol

It's just a wheel Bearing, it ain't gonna  rip out your cases, break your rods or cylinders , yeah it could maybe hurt you, a lot of things could. It can hurt your rear wheel, just part of it, but usually it wont, even then it would be because you ignored the bad sound and wouldn't stop. Or just re and re the dang thing it s only maybe 20 bux.. the retainer is a bit tricky to get out.. we will help you..

Haha thanks! I packed it full of Lucas Heavy Duty high speed bearing grease and it's spinning much smoother. I wasn't positive how to remove the retainer so since it's not grinding or sticking I just repacked it and put my new sprocket on

Here's something similar: the 750K0 bikes had plastic chainguards and sometimes got holes in them from too-loose chains. Once a rider repaired his guard with fiberglass and body filler, but didn't seal off the inside where it was close to the chain: it later nabbed whole pieces of the fiberglass and shredded it all over the back of the bike! It had little fuzzy things like yours, stuck with grease all around the taillight, grab bar, and...inside the sprocket carrier's bearing, which made it 'rumble' and got it into the shop for a new bearing. That stuff was all over.
