What the heck happened to my petcock!?
« on: February 24, 2018, 02:15:57 PM »
Hey everyone I went to go change my Oil  and turnes the gas on and gas just started to pour out of my petcock .
I bought a petcock gasket kit took everything apart and put it back together.
when I turned the gas on again it started leaking all over the bike.
upon further inspection it is coming out from the on off switch.
When I try to screw in the screws on either side holding the plate in they just spin in place..they are stripped and cannot apply enough pressure to keep the gas from leaking..
how did this happen!? So sad!

What can I do to fix this!? Will I have to buy a whole new petcock assembly?
Does anyone have one for a Cb350f?

You could drill and tap the threads to increase the screw size.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

Or drill through the holes to the other side and use a small nut on the screw.

I've done this on other parts. OR - you can spring for a used or new one. That would be my solution.

I doubt you could drill right thru. You can retap a size bigger..
 But..
If that is a recent pic you posted, and both sides of the plate are that far down , it must have a leak elsewhere.

Also, take it apart one more time, and put it back together. Make sure all the gaskets/o-rings are in the right place. You never know - you may get lucky.

I would re-tap to the next size up probably going with a non-metric USA size if there is enough room if indeed stripped. Might be just a tad bigger. A real shade tree fix would be to use a course metal screw slightly larger in diameter as a last resort. You said you rebuilt it also, if it has the wavy washer did you put it on the outside of the handle under the plate and not inside. I did that once by mistake but please don't tell anybody  ;) It was a major leaker out the handle !

I'm with Gene...get a new one. Once and done! You are certainly not the first one to try a rebuild only to have a leak.

No - shade tree would use a wood screw :D

also, if it has the wavy washer did you put it on the outside of the handle under the plate and not inside.

That's what I meant by "try it one more time"

Does anyone know the size of these screws or how to tap out?
I am trying to find a replacement.. this sucks big time.

Every time I take the tank off it somehow gets scratched..
Does anyone have a spare?

  • So, what do ya wanna talk about today?
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Upsize the screws as suggested to the next metric size and retap with a 4.5 mm or a 5mm X .75TP bottoming tap and rebuild correctly. The tap and screws will be a lot cheaper than buying a new OEM petcock, or a cheap aftermarket Chinese one.
Needs to be a bottoming tap as you have a blind hole by the looks of that petcock body design.

If that one you referenced in your Amazon purchase has the same connection as your tank does then it is probably a cheap option that you can use and keep you old one as a backup. It doesn't list a CB350F, so you need to be sure that the mount is the same as what you have on your tank.

Take your petcock to an engineer supply store and show them mate, they'll be able to provide the next size up tap and screws. ;D

and the correct drill bit to use, probably work out more costly than a new fuel tap if you don't already have the tools you need for a one off job?

I'm thinking if Dos has ripped out the old thread he may not need to drill it out Dave? He might be able to run a tap thru the enlarged hole? ;D

That metal is so easy to tap that no drill bit is needed. You are right about the oversize and the thin clearance around the hole, yet I have done a number that way and have been successful.
The cheap chinese stuff is an option, yet OEM in Canada is north of $100 new and not an option.

Does getting a bigger screw and just screwing that in work?

If not I will bring it somewhere and tap it I guess
