I owned a mower / chainsaw shop for a number of years here in Kiwiland and I quickly learnt that in terms of chainsaw quality you need to stick with the name brands e.g Husqvarna, Stihl, Echo and Shindaiwa (sounds Chinese but in fact it's Japanese and good).
If you buy from the bulk stores like Bunnings, Mitre 10 etc you will get Chinese crap - that's why its cheap and they don't have spares / servicing back up either.
Also be aware that some of the old makes that had good reputations like McCulloch are just nowadays Chinese machines sold by someone who has bought the naming rights.
In terms of mowers and chainsaws the old adage of "you get what you pay for" definitely applies.

I also found an old mac,got it going sold it,bit rough but got enough for a carton!even new small stihls have non adjustable carbies,thats like saying theres no cold beer!

The MS251 for 800 bucks caught the attention.
I reckon it'll do the job for what I need around here.

thatll be a plenty good saw Mick,pull of the chain/clutch cover after every use and blow it out!in particular don't leave palm tree #$%* gummed up it that area clean it out after use,its still a clam shell motor not a split magnesium case though.

Dave - hijacking this thread for a quick CB500 question.
My ignition advancer unit doesn't have the pin to locate it on the end of the crank, Is the pin part of the unit or has mine broken off / fallen out ? I can't see a pin listed in the parts manual.

the pin is part of the main body,maybe someone cranked on that big nut and sheared it off?has yours got a neat hole where it should be?i have a couple spare if you cant find one in NZ

almost correct stryboen,i still have the avatar shirt its a heavy duty lined one,that torn up one had seen better days and those cotton shirts make excellent rags.

I've just recently had my old Homelite 360 out for a 'spin'. I heat my shop with wood and early spring is a good time to cut up dead downed ash trees around my house from the winter winds. That saw has been in the family for many many years.Dad cut with it when I was a whippersnapper. When it idles it sounds more like an old Yamaha 360, very distinctive pop pop pop sound. Use a lighter smaller model Stihl also for smaller stuff. Have a bunch of other saws I have bought at yard sales etc that I haven't tinkered with. A lot of times its just a broken fuel line or dirty carb from sitting to get them going again.

Ok Mick me lad according to my oldest Grandson who's a climber and a tree cutter ( graduate of Georgian College Aborist program ) Stihl magnum before fuel injection and he say's if you can find a used one even better he uses a 046 magnum but he figures anything in the magnum series is good, there you go the word from a pro.

Finding an old used unit locally is mission impossible.
I've bitten the bullet and bought a new Stihl MS251Z.
When I get home tonight and the missus finds out, I'll probably be getting the bullet.
But ya get that on these big jobs.
She'll get over it ......... next year.

don't get that new saw dirty mick!yeah I guess Darwin isn't big on used chainsaws,ive been checking out Darwin on google maps for work lately(im still or is it stihl on light duties),we have to field overflow calls from our branch up there,those homelites were a great saw,bit hard for some parts now,old neighbour had a smaller old one that was real beaten up but did his pruning ok,the coil died and I couldn't find one anywhere for weeks and weeks,i gave him a pissy little beaten up mac I found,he was more than happy.

Well I looked on Ebay for another chainsaw like my Mac Super Pro 118 but couldn't find one, so I looked on Gumtree and there was only one ad for a bloke looking for them, dead or alive? I told him I had one in really good nick and what is it worth, and he said it's very collectable, and one in the condition I described is worth around 1000 bucks? Woohoo, that was good pickup for free, I wish I'd taken the other two home now!

Nice shiny new saw there mate.
It'll start easy and last for ages.
My year or so old one has those same fuel and oil filler caps. Don't mean to rain on your parade but I reckon they are a "Lemon" of a design.
Just you wait, after several tank fulls you will notice that debris seems to get directed into the tanks. My 30 year old one had better filler caps even if you needed a big screwdriver to open em.
That's about the only beef I have with mine.
