electric start on 77 CB550
« on: February 25, 2018, 06:57:25 PM »
Hello all. I've got a 77 CB550 that has an electric starter that has not yet been hooked up.
There is no control for an electric start on the bike. What a  i not getting or what do i need to add in order to use the electric start?
I can't post pictures yet, but i will as soon as I'm able.

There are four wires involved in electric start on your bike. From a components stand point, you need the starter motor (should be installed in the motor case, just behind the cylinders on the left side, on top), the starter solenoid is under the left side body panel, and the start button on the right handlebar control pod.

The wiring is:
Starter motor has a large gauge wire running to a post on the solenoid.
Battery POS runs to the other post on the solenoid.
The solenoid then has two thinner gauge wires, a Green/Red stripe to the Neutral switch, and a Yellow/Red stripe running to the right hand control pod, push button.

When you push the button, the Y/R sends 12v to the solenoid, the Gr/R provides the ground, then DC power from the battery is sent to the starter motor. Vroom.

Easy.

That is exactly the advice i was looking for. Thank you.
My bike does not have a start button on the right grip, though. Presumably someone replaced bits and pieces over the years and that was lost.

I'll take a look at the battery, but before i can get anything working I'll have to get a starter solenoid. It seems someone thought they were better off without it.

There’s nothing special about them. Plenty available through the usual vendors.

Check out www.oldmanhonda.com for an interactive wiring diagram.  It will give you a good idea of the fundamentals of how the starter circuits work.

Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
